Kate Reynolds
Birth 14 June 1871 • Kildorrery, Co. Cork, Ireland
Kate was the first of the nine Reynolds children to be born. In 1871, when she was born, her father, Thomas aged 51 years was working as a baker.
One can assume that the family was, by the standards of those days, reasonably well off.
Kate enrolled in the local National School in April 1875, aged 4 years. At that time the school was not located in the village of Kildorrery itself but in the rural area of Scart, a mile or so from Kildorrery.
This situation continued till 1977, when a new Primary School was opened in Kildorrery. The school in Scart was later converted into a dwelling place and with its brick walls looks most attractive.
An interesting fact recorded in the School Register is that Kate was among the pupils, who paid a fee.
A number of children could not have afforded to pay a fee, a situation which would have applied to the younger Reynolds children, who were either attending school, when their father died in 1895 or enrolled in school after 1895.
The death of the breadwinner would have entailed hardship for the family and the necessity for the older children to get any employment they could. There were no Widows' Pensions or social benefits in those days and poverty was the norm rather than the exception.
One can imagine little Kate walking over a mile to school in all weathers and her level of attendance was quite good. She advanced as far as 4th or 5th Standard and was finally struck off the register on 31st March 1883.
It would have been customary for children to leave school at an early age around 12 to 14 years. There was no Secondary School in the locality, so only the very wealthy could continue their education by attending Boarding Schools.
We know from elderly local residents, who are very interested in the history of the locality, that Kate at some stage began working as a domestic servant in the MacDonald household.
In 1892 Kate's world must have been shattered, when as a single girl, she gave birth to a baby boy, Joseph.
We know from Joseph's Birth Certificate that he was born in the Reynolds home in Kildorrery. We can assume that Kate, as was the custom of the time, would have been banished from her family home.
To have a baby outside wedlock was seen as a dreadful family disgrace and this attitude prevailed for many decades right up till about the 1970s or 1980s. The Catholic Church would also have been a major influence with the Parish Priest in many instances putting pressure on the family to disown a young unmarried mother.
All credit is due to the Reynolds Family, who took the baby Joseph under their wings and reared him.
To this day, well over 100 years after the birth of Joseph, the older people in the locality are aware that Joseph's father was the young man in the MacDonald household, where Kate worked and that Joseph was named after his father, Alexander Joseph MacDonald, who according to the 1911 Census, 19 years after Joseph's birth, was a veterinary surgeon, aged 41 years and married for under a year.
The MacDonalds lived in a very large house right in the centre of Kildorrery village.
There is no available record of Kate again till 1907, when she married Daniel O'Mahony in Bandon.
The marriage certificate makes for sad reading. Daniel's occupation is given as a labourer and Kate's as a servant. Unfortunately, the priest, who signed the Marriage Register made a very serious mistake.
In the column headed "condition" which refers to marital status and required the answer "bachelor", "spinster", "widow" etc. the priest had for both bride and groom written the word "tramp". The official in the Office of the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths was completely perplexed by this record and rang the office in Cork where the original is kept to verify the entry and his contact in Cork claimed to have never seen such a record before.
One can only hope that Kate found some happiness and companionship in her marriage. To date no later records regarding Kate or her husband Daniel have been discovered.
