Pauline "Polly" (Houghton) Taylor, 87, of South Kirby, died early Saturday morning, June 23, 2012, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, surrounded by her family.
She was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Lyndonville, Vt., the daughter of Paul and Ruby (Page) Houghton. She attended Red Village School and graduated from Lyndon Institute, class of 1944. In her early years, she was employed at Fairview Fashions and later Maple Grove, both in St. Johnsbury.
Polly married Albert M. Taylor of South Kirby on Sept. 1, 1945. For 66 years they lived in the house Albert was born in. She achieved her dream of being a farmer's wife; they owned and operated Glendale Farm from 1957 to 1998.
She held the office of school director and auditor for the town of Kirby. For more than 30 years, she wrote neighbourhood news for The Caledonian-Record. She taught sewing and cooking as a 4-H leader for 17 years. She was a member of the East Lyndon Methodist Church and later transferred to the Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury. She was also a member of Kirby Quilters and was in the Home Demonstration Group in Kirby and later Concord. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, quilting, knitting, making raised doughnuts during sugaring, going to the lake, travelling with Pat and Polly Patterson as well as Kenneth and Florence Ward, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Albert, this past February; her parents, two brothers, Philip and wife Dorothy Houghton and Edwin "Mickey" Houghton; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Thelma and Harold Drew and Mary and David Franklin; her nephew, Dana Houghton; and lifelong friend, Mabel Simpson Bubar.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at the Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury with the Rev. Ann Hockridge officiating.
Burial will be private and held at a later date in Grove Cemetery in East St. Johnsbury.
