Maurice Patrick "Maury" Keaveny, of Sharon, passed away peacefully at 5:10 p.m. Friday, (3-14-14), in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 86.
Mr. Keaveny was born April 28, 1927, on Putnam Drive, Sharon, one of 10 children to John and Mary Ellen (Nugent) Keaveny.
A lifelong Sharon resident, he attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School. At the age of 16, Maury began working at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
With World War II escalating, he quit Sharon High School his junior year to join the Merchant Marines in January 1945, serving as a steward aboard a liberty ship on convoy duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He left the merchant fleet in June 1946, returned home, received his GED from Sharon High School and was drafted into the Army.
Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Youngstown State University and returned to Westinghouse where he retired as a sales engineer in 1984 after 40 years of service.
In March of 1985 he was called back to work an assignment at Westinghouse's South Boston, Va., transformer plant for an additional nine months and once again retired in December of 1985. During his "retirement," Maury was employed part time as a tour guide at the former Bortner Tours, South Pymatuning Township, and as a starter at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course, Hermitage.
Maury served in many capacities during his lifetime. He was an active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, where he was a lector for 50 years, an altar server for funerals, a Monday morning money counter and a Eucharistic Minister. Years earlier, he served as a Cub Scout Master for St. Joseph Cub Scouts, was president of St. Joseph School's Parent-Teacher Organization, president of the Holy Name Society, president of Parish Council, coordinator for the bazaars, and a member of the Parish and Diocesan Liturgy Committees.
Most recently, Maury served as chair of the Catholic Services Appeal for the Western Vicariate of the Diocese of Erie. For his many contributions to the church, the Most Rev. Donald W. Trautman, former Bishop of Erie, awarded him the Bishop's Commendation for Service Medal in April of 2011. Maury was a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 684, Sharon; and a member of the 4th Degree, Sharon Assembly, where he was a past Faithful Navigator.
Maury also engrossed himself in service clubs and community activities. He was a past president of the Sharpsville Service Club; a second vice-president of the AARP, Shenango Valley Chapter 3616; and assistant secretary-treasurer of Sharon Regional Health System's Building Authority. He was a Sharon city councilman for eight years, 1968-1975, serving as president the last four years; a longtime member and past president of Sharon Kiwanis Club; and secretary-treasurer of the White Collar Sharon Westinghouse Employees Association.
A former "Democrat of the year," he served Mercer County as director of Voter Registration and Elections for eight years and was a Jury Commissioner for 12 years, retiring for the last time on Dec. 31, 2013.
Maury was a volunteer escort for Sharon Regional Health System and very active with the Mercer County Association for the Retarded. In recognition of his service to the community, he was named a Buhl Day Honoree in 2005. As a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, he was a recipient of its annual "Hibernian of the Year" award.
Maury's favorite pastime was golf. He was a member and officer of the former Thursday night Westinghouse golf league at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course for more than 40 years and played in a Wednesday night golf league at Tam O'Shanter until May of last year. He was fortunate to attend two US Opens, the Ryder Cup, a PGA tournament and The Masters in Augusta, Ga. He enjoyed volunteering for the LPGA Tournament when it was held at Avalon Lakes in Vienna, Ohio.
Maury was a remarkable man who felt a selfless responsibility to serve others. His family, church and the community were the benefactors. Well done, good and faithful servant!
His loving wife of 59 years, the former Patricia Jean Flynn, whom he married Oct. 9, 1948, passed away Nov. 15, 2007.
