Humbert is also styled as 'Umberto ', as 'the fat' de Maurienne and a s Umberto II "il Rinforzato" of Savoy, Aosta and Moriana. At least on e source indicates that Humbert's mother may have been 'Matilda of Vie nne'. Humbert II, was Count of Savoy from 1080 until his death in 1103 . He was married to Gisela of Burgundy, daughter of William I, Counto f Burgundy and Stephany de Longwy, and had 4 children: Amedeo; William , Bishop of Liège; Adelaide, (d. 1154), married to Louis VI of France ; Agnes, (d. 1127), married to Arcimboldo VI (Archibald VI in English? ) of Burgundy.

At the time of his fathers death, Humbert's sister Adelaide succeededt o the throne, but after her death, the supporters of Humbert claimedth e throne for him in 1198. At an early age he took the crusading vow, but affairs at home did not permit him to fulfill it. He devoted muc h of his time to the territorial aggrandizement of this house. Befor e he died he had extended his control over one episcopal see and adde d one county to the dominions of Savoy. Because of his military powe r he was styled 'le Renforce', meaning the Strong. Tradition relatest hat despite his forceful policies, he remained on good terms with the church.
