Philip Thomas MEDEMA 2/18/1944 ~ 11/23/2011 Philip, age 67 of Seattle (Ballard) passed away on November 23, 2011 from complications of Leukemia. He spent his entire life, born, working and living in the area. Phil retired from BNRR after 32 years in 2001. He was fondly known as the 'Old Goat' since he started working for Great Northern RR. He worked as a bridge tender at West Seattle and Ballard RR bridges for many years. He was very resilient throughout too many years of health challenges and kept up a joking attitude and silly sayings to the end and will be deeply missed. Family was at the core of his life and he was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle and foster father. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn; daughters, DeAnna (Mike) Sanders and Debbi (Ernie) Welsh; 5 loving grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah, Daniel, Matthew and Christopher; and siblings, Arthur, Nora, Robert, Jett and Marion. Preceded in death by his father, Arthur Medema; mother, Eileen Medema Lewis; stepfather, Chuck Lewis; and mother-in-law, Wanda Lee Smith, whom he loved like his own mother. Phil was an avid local sports fan, enjoyed his vacations at the cabin in Copalis, liked to take trips, fishing, Bingo, going out to dinner and looking at the water at Golden Gardens while eating an ice cream cone. If a person ever needed a helping hand, he would be there, from painting, working a paper drive, or washing dishes at some event. Mother Nature's creatures knew to come to his backyard habitat where they also enjoyed a peanut or two. We know your pain is now gone, and you are walking everywhere and yelling for your teams to win the World Series and Superbowl. You will be missed. Also a big 'Thank you' to his team, Doctors Fogerty and Milder and their staff, for all their wonderful care and support. At his request, no services will be held. Donations to Seattle Children's Hospital or Autism Speaks.
