Bart graduated from Tucson High School, Tucson, AZ in 1952. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering at BYU, Provo, UT, 1961, and an MBA at Athens State College (Athens State University), Athens, AL, 1972. He was married to the late Elma Ann Sampson from 1961-2004. After losing Elma to cancer in 2004, Bart married Carol Davis in 2006.
Bart was a retired mechanical engineer for Boeing Aerospace Co., 1961-1974 & 1978-1994. His work included the Apollo-Saturn V program, Missile Defense, Fiber-optics Research, Anti-Radar Systems, Space Lab, and the International Space Station. He received many awards including Apollo Mission Honor Roll, Skylab achievement, the William Allen Volunteer of the Year award and he held three patents in the field of fiber-optics. He was an active American Society of Mechanical Engineers member.
Bart was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young adult, he served a full-time mission to Australia. He served a second mission to Australia with his late wife Elma and a third mission to Fort Payne, AL with Carol. He held various positions in the Church including being in the Stake Presidency over the north Alabama area of the Church. He was an active temple worker in the Atlanta, GA, and the Birmingham, AL temples.
An enthusiastic leader in the Boy Scouts of America, he earned the Silver Beaver District Service Award.
He was an active amateur radio operator since 1984 (KK4AI) and held an Extra Class License. A regular participant of the local chapter of the Emergency Radio Communications Net, he helped provide emergency communication in the areas affected by hurricanes Andrew, Opal, Ivan, and Katrina.
A devoted husband and father, Bart is survived by his wife Carol and six children: Jeanette (Mark) Ivie of Pittsburgh, PA; Sandra (Brent) Poulson of Tehachapi, CA; Karl (Rebecca) of Hartselle, AL; Darin (Charity) of Spanish Fork, UT; Glenn (Neena) Davis of Huntsville, AL; and Jackie (Tony) Davis Allen of Athens, AL. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four brothers, and five sisters.
The funeral was at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Huntsville. He was laid to rest at Huntsville Memory Gardens. (Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville served the family).Quelle 2
