Kennedy's crime was breaking and entering and he was an habitual offender. He was tried and convicted in Glasgow but Scotland did not want to take part in the transportation program, prefering to take care of their own. However, their prisons became so full they were forced to take part. Kennedy was one of the first 20 convicts from Scotland. He arrived in NSW on 14 Feb 1792 and was sent to Toongabbie convict station which had a very poor reputation. Four years later, probably because he was a troublemaker, he was transferred to Norfolk Island on the Calcutta on 1 Oct 1796. Here he took up with Ann White - there is no evidence of him marrying her but he may have because records were not kept at that time. Kennedy deserted Ann and his children on 23 Apr 1802 (meaning Sarah could not have been his) his sentence having expired on 1 January 1802. He went to Ceylon and then returned to Australia but not to Ann. He was granted 30 acres near Penrith and wound up in Richmond where he married Ann Parker; they had four sons. In the early 1820s, Kennedy was caught stealing chickens from the local magistrate but was never brought to trial because of a shake-up in the judiciary. He died in 1853 at Prospect House, Evandale. He apparently absconded to avoid the police and, in 1828, we discover him living on 3 acres at Coasters Retreat near Pittwater with John Murray aged 17 and Ann Haines listed as his housekeeper. They lived in a group of 3 huts almost on the beach but most of the other residents lived on the terraces above the basin.
Hearing how well his son Kennedy was doing, Kennedy senior then left Ann Haines and moved to Tasmania to live with his son. It is said he spent his later years sitting on the back verandah with his best mate, artist John Glover, drinking and exchanging far-fetched stories.Quelle 3
