LATE MR. L. F. NIELSEN
The funeral of the late Mr. Leo F Nielson took place at Devonport on May 25. Known as "Doc" Nielsen, he was most popular with returned men from the last war. He passed away at the Re-
patriation Hospital in Hobart. He was the fourth son of the late Thomas and Marie Nielsen, of Devonport and served with distinction in the last war. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in the field, and won the Military Medal for gallantry at Moquet Farm, France. His devotion to duty was ex-
emplified in the beaching of the troopship Southland off Gallipoli in 1915. After the ship had been torpedoed, "Doc" and his O.C. (Captain Wellington) offered to keep the engines running, and called for volunteers to man the pumps Sufficient were forthcoming to keep the vessel afloat, and it was towed to Lemnos Island and beached. On return to Devonport he resumed his calling as a waterside worker. He was president of the local branch for a term, and at the time of his death had occupied the position of secretary for five years. His wife predeceased him some 10 years ago Two daughters, Betty aud Kyra, survive him, also four brothers and three sisters.
The cortege left the home of his brother, Mr. P. N. Nielsen, of Spreyton road, It was preceded by members of the R.A.O.B.. of which deceased was a member, and followed by a very large procession of comrades und friends. The officiating clergyman was Rev. S. E. Dorman. The ritual of the Returned Soldiers' League was read by Dr. J. F. M. Payne (president) and Messrs. R. Lapthorne (treasurer) and G. E. H. Moon.
The Last Post was sounded by Mr. W. Holmes, manager of the U.S.S. The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. A. Littler and R. Lapthorne, representing the Returned Soldiers' League: and Fred. Doran and
Bert. Hayes, representing the Waterside Workers' Federation. The carriers were Messrs. A. Povey and Stan. Nurse and two nephews, Messrs. Roy and Ralph Nielsen. Among floral tributes were those
received from the Devonport-Latrobe sub branch of the R.S.L.; Waterside Workers' Federation, committee of the Waterside Workers, Non-Union Wharf Laborers, R.A.O.B., shipping agents of Devonport, manager and staff of the U.S.S. Co., Devonport branch of William Holyman and
Sons, Tag. Holloway Pty. Ltd., Commercial Hotel (Devonport), Alexander's Hotel (Devonport, and Railton Hotel.
