BITUARY.
Mr. J. Chilcott, North
Motton.
Mr. Josiah Chilcott, of North Mot-
ton, who died at the Ulverstone Hos-
pital on Sunday, was born at Bread-
albane in 1855. His wife, who died
15 years ago, was the daughter of
the late John Hudson, one of the
earliest settlers in the North Mot-
ton district. They were married at
Penguin by the Rev. Oglethorp. There
were six in the family-Messrs. E. J.
and Leonard Chilcott, and Mesdames
H. Saltmarsh and C. Wilson, of North
Motton; Mrs. A. Bowden, deceased;
and Mrs. V. Johns, of Melbourne. There
are 12 grand-children, and ten great
grand-children. A brother, Mr. W.
Chilcott, resides in Victoria.
Mr. Chilcott was a staunch suppor-
ter of the Methodist Church, and was
a trustee and superintendent of the
Sunday school. Mr. Chilcotts edu-
cation was limited to a short term
at Butleigh Hill, Longford, under the
tuition of the late Mr. A. C. Wellard.
Later he went to Forth and worked
with Mr. Thomas Trebilco; then on
to Gawler to the property now occu-
pied by Mr. de Bomford. Then he
took up land at North Motton, and
his son Leonard resides on the same
property. Later he purchased the pro-
perty of the late Mr. Saltmarsh, and
resided there with his daughter, Mrs.
Saltmarsh, up till his death.
The deceased was a vigorous and
active man until quite recently, when
he met with a slight injury. A fence
rail fell on his arm, blood poison set
in, and it was only a few days from
the injury till he died. A well-known
figure in the district, where he was
held in high esteem, he will be missed
in the home and in the church, which
he never failed to attend.
The funeral took place on Monday
afternoon at the Methodist Ceme-
tery, North Motton. The cortege, which
moved from the home of Mrs. H.
Saltmarsh, was very lengthy and rep-
resentative. Rev. A. Vineer held a
service at the home, and at the
church he was assisted by Rev. T. H.
P. Woodford, of Bendigo, a former
minister of the church.
The chief mourners were the sons.
Messrs. Leonard and Ernest J. Chil-
cott; sons-in-law, Messrs. Henry Salt-
marsh and Clarence Wilson; brother-
in-law, Mr. Frank Tongs; nephews,
Messs. A. Brothers and C. Tongs;
grandsons. Messrs. Douglas Chilcott,
Cecil and Graham Saltmarsh, and Ray-
mond Wilson.
The pall-bearers were four trustees
of the Methodist Church, Messrs. H.
Boon, W. Mason, T. Badcock and A.
Walker, and the carriers Messrs. H
Walters, E. Wilson, C. Tongs, and C.
Saltmarsh. There were many
wreaths.
