Melvin Smith Warren Was born in Va. according to the 1850 cen., in Ohio by 1860 cen. He was Marr. in Lawrence Co. Mo. 16 Sep 1847. Mel. S. Warren Was Born in Vinyard, Lawr. Co in 1850. Marr. in Jasper Co. Mo 26 Dec 1875. to Mary Elizebeth Van Hoy. They came West by wagon train (I believe from Independance) by way of the Oregon Trail to The Dalles, Oregon in 1878. They joinded a wagon train of 60 wagons.They brought with them two Daughters,Etta Emma age abt 20 months, and Anna Louise age about 5 months old. Mary nursed both girls on the trip. On the trip West, then came across two places where Indians had massacured a wagon train. The wagon master died and Melvin was appointed as wagon master for the rest of the trip. At one point they were attact by Indians and all the horses run off but one. He went after them and brought all the Horses back and they continued on. After arriving in The Dalles, the train broke up with parts going to the Willamette Valley, Seattle area, Walla Walla, and Goldendale area. Our family was one of these, settling near Blockhouse, about 7 miles N.W.of Goldendale. They built a Log cabin N.W. of Blockhouse Butte, later addi ng to it. They cooked on a Fire Place. They were Farmers and raised 4 girls and 3 boys. Frederick (Clarence) was born about a year after they arrived in the N.W. He didn't have a middle name so he picked one (Clarence) a few years later. Mary E. died at Home on 9 may 1896 at the age of 45. Melvin Died 18 may 1906 at Goldendale. They are buried outside the fence of a private cemetary on the farm where they lived West of Blockhouse Butte.The Cowell Place. There is no Head Stone. Stories from Tisha Warren Nehls, Melvin an d Mary were traveling home from the Marriage on a mule- She was Crying. He told her he would take her home to her parents if she didn't stop. They spoke of living in Carthage and Jopin, this was about 1875.In Washington they had a farm of 160 Ac.Melvin had no schoolin beyond 9 Years. Tisha taught him to write his name in the sand. Melvin was school Superintant of the Crofton PrarieSchool at the time Tishi was in school. Later Hazel warren went to the same school, but in a new one room building..Melvin also herded sheep near Klicitat, He raised corn,wheat apples,peaches,plums,a big field of Strawberries, and Rasberries,a large garden and flowers.
