He was born in Posen, Germany. He emigrated in 1867 to America. He was naturalized in 1875. He Served in the Prussian Army from 1864 to 1866 and deserted to emigrated to America. He had received Blacksmith training in Germany prior to coming to America. The skill proved to be a much need addition to the pioneer Dutch community in Lancaster County, Nebraska. Prior to his arriving little maintenance was done on farm equipment.
He and Mary Liesveld, daughter of Derk Richard "Dick" Liesveld and Martina "Martha" VanDerteems, were married in 1873 in Hastings, Mills County, Iowa. They migrated, with her mother, from Hastings, Iowa to Holland, Lancaster County, Nebraska in 1878. Mary's father had died in Hastings, Iowa. Her mother, Martha Liesveld, wanted to live near her oldest son Herman who had relocated to Holland, Nebraska area.
