Isaac Motte, Revolutionary hero, son of Jacob Motte, Dutch consul at Dublin Ireland who came to America and was for years treasurer of the province of South Carolina, was born on December 8, 1738. Aft er receiving a military education, he fought against the French and Indians in Canada in 1756, On June 7 1775, he was made lieutenant colonel of the Second South Carolina regiment, serving under Willi am Moultrie, In July, 1775, by order of the Committee of Safety, he commanded three companies of his regiment in an attack on Fort Johnson, which he captured in sight of the British fleet in Charleston harbor. As second in command, he played a conspicuous part in the defense of Fort Moultrie. On September 16, 1776, he was promoted colonel. He represented South Carolina as a delegate to the Continental Congress, 1780-1782 , and was a member of the state convention that ratified the United States constitution. In 1789 he was appointed by President Washington to the position of naval officer of the port of Charleston, serving until his death on May 8, 1795. His sister-in-law Rebecca Brewton Motte, is remembered for her heroism during the Revolutionary War, offering assistance in the destruction of her mansion in order to force British troops in it, besieged by Henry Lee and Francis Marion, to surrender. Two of her daughters successively became wives of Thomas Pinckney.
