"Edward Wassell, 94, a longtime resident of Oxnard, died on Feb. 28, 2011 at his home in Oxnard after a prolonged illness. A child of the 1920s, an adolescent of the depression and a WWII veteran, Ed was born on Aug. 7, 1916 in Johnstown, Pa. He was graduated by the Valley Forge Military Academy in 1935, and the Cornell University School of Architecture in 1941. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1941 and left the Air Force as a Captain after service in North Africa and Italy. Later he was promoted to the rank of Major and retired from in the Air Force Reserves. Edward married Pauline Ann Schneider in 1942. Married for 65 years, he and Pauline were members of Santa Clara Parish in Oxnard. Ed always boasted that he was married for 65 years but knew his wife for 80. Edward had a long and distinguished architectural career, having built his own practice in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., from the ground up. Wassell & Associates, later known as Wassell & Pyros, was one of the premire architectural firms in Northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1960s and 70s. They designed every type of structure from homes to para-mutual racetracks. Ed was a Renaissance man. Fluent in five languages, he was a wine connoisseur, inventor, collector of fine art, painter and pianist. Somewhat of a child prodigy he painted feverishly from age 9 to 11. Today his paintings grace the homes of his children. After retirement from his architectural practice his interests turned to inventions. He invented a lift chair to aid the handicapped and disabled, the bedoilet and the "Wassell Ever-Level Picture Hanging System" which he patented and had manufactured by the thousands. Edward is survived by five children: Edward J. Wassell and his wife Roberta of Anchorage, Alaska; Joe and Bernice Wassell of Peachtree City, Ga.; Louise and Jack Kocienski of Port Hueneme, Calif.; Father John Wassell of Elizabeth, N.J.; and Robert Wassell of Saticoy, Calif. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery."
