John White, son of Anthony White, had 29 slaves on his indigo plantation in Prince Frederick Parish. As had been his father, White was active in local affairs. He served the parish as a vestryman (1733-1736, 1737-1757, 1758-1760) and churchwarden (1736-1737). In 1757 there was a bitterly contested parish election and he was one of the losers. Other offices he held were tax inquirer and collector, for Prince George Winyah Parish (1734); commissioner to build a bridge over the Black River (1744); and captain (1743-1750), major (1750-1755); lieutenant colonel (1755-1760) in the Craven Count Regiment. He represented Prince Frederick in the Fifteenth Royal Assembly (1746-1747). White married twice: by his first wife Sarah (d .1741) he had Anthony, Joseph, William, Hannah and Catherine . His second wife was Mary Leah, daughter of John Leay and Mary Myreck and the widow of Thomas Ferguson. They had two children, Sarah and Blake Leay. John White died sometime between July 8, 1760 when he attended a vestry meeting and December 1760, for the parish register noted his death in 1760 but gave no date.
Settled on the Black River about 1735. Very active church member. In 1734 entered his cattle brand as being a figure 2 and a fleur de lis on the back there of as in the margin and his mark being a swallow fork in the right ear and a poplar leaf in the left ear. Raised indigo. John White's will was dated 24 Feb. 1758 and probated 7 Jan. 1761.
