Dr. James Bates (Bob) Kittrell, age 94, a resident of Texarkana, Arkansas, died Friday, March 4, 2011.
Dr. Kittrell was born December 30, 1916, at his family residence on 1103 Hickory Street. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Texarkana, Arkansas.
He completed his undergraduate work at Southern Methodist University and obtained his medical degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School. He furthered his medical training in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
As a Captain in the United States Army Air Corps, Dr. Kittrell served his country during World War II as a flight surgeon in Europe, North Africa, and Central America.
After discharge from the military, he practiced medicine with his father and then continued in private practice in Texarkana until his retirement in 1986. Dr. Kittrell was a member of the medical staff at Wadley and St. Michael’s Hospitals and served as chief of staff at each. He also served as director of the University of Arkansas AHEC for a number of years, assisting in the training and placement of many local physicians.
Dr. Kittrell was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Thomas F. Kittrell and Eula Mae Kittrell; his first wife of 43 years, Ruth Estelle Hendrick Kittrell; his brother, Thomas Kittrell; and an infant sister, Ann Fleming Kittrell.
He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Needham Kittrell; daughter, Judith Ann Czarny and husband, Peter Czarny of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Susan Ruth Kittrell of Little Rock, Arkansas; daughter, Barbara Fleming Hoyt and husband, Dr. Jonathan Hoyt of DeQueen, Arkansas; grandchildren, Nathan Pearce Czarny, Brownelle Bates Hoyt, Catherine Estelle Hoyt; and stepson, Thomas Damon Needham and family of Virginia.
Dr. Kittrell will always be remembered for his compassion toward his patients and their families. Not one to miss a free meal, he was seldom absent from medical staff meetings and was known for his habit of wearing very colorful bowties. His family and friends recall his wonderful sense of humor and can still hear him whistling down the halls of the hospital. He will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Highway 67 in Texarkana, Texas, at 2:00 P.M., Monday March 7, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home, Texas.
Those wishing to memorialize Dr. Kittrell may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Texarkana, Arkansas, or to the charity of their choice.
