I am seeking information as to who the father of Nathaniel Kittrell of Orangeburgh District, South Carolina is. He, along with some brothers, migrated to Lauderdale County, MS in the 1800s. They were led by the scout, Gen. Sam Dale and were accompanied by a Coats family. Nathaniel married Tabitha Coats, daughter of Sion Coats, who accompanied Nathaniel Kittrell and possibly, Nathaniel's father on the trip to Mississippi. Any information will be welcome. Thomas E. Sam Dale: A colorful, celebrated frontiersman
by Larry Brewer
District 4 Director of Field Services
Writer's Note: Insurance Commissioner George Dale is a descendant. His lineage is through one of Sam Dale's brothers.

Sam Dale is one of Mississippi's most colorful and celebrated frontiersmen. In his day, he was often compared to Daniel Boone, distinguishing himself as a pioneer, a soldier and a scout.

A large man, over 6' 2" tall, Dale was known for a calm, cool demeanor and exhibitions of remarkable strength in emergencies. In his early adult life, many of his exploits sound like those of a fictional character. He distinguished himself in warfare with the Indians, yet they both feared and revered him, calling him "Big Sam" as a token of respect.

He felt the disadvantages of a formal education and yet he had a town in Mississippi and a county in Alabama named for him. He was selected as a Brigadier General of the State Militia, was elected to the commission to determine the division of the Mississippi Territory into the states of Alabama and Mississippi and was elected to the legislatures of both Alabama and Mississippi.

Sam Dale was born in 1871 on a farm in Rockridge, Virginia to parents of Scots-Irish ancestry. Times were hard and sometimes dangerous as the early pioneers struggled to settle this country. When several neighbors were killed by Indians, the family moved to Greensborough, Georgia.

When Dale was but 19 years old, his parents died within one week of each other, leaving him to care for eight younger brothers and sisters including an infant. In order to cope with the indebtedness, Sam left his siblings in the charge of an older, trusted couple and joined a newly formed active unit of militia and distinguished himself with many acts of bravery and heroism.

During periods of peace with the Indians, Sam served as a guide in building a new road to the Cherokee Nation, became a trader with the Indians, farmed and moved immigrants to the Mississippi territory.

In 1811 on one of his trading trips, Sam attended the annual Grand Council meeting of the Creeks and heard the war speech of the Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. Tecumseh was visiting the Southern Tribes to persuade them to join with other tribes in expelling the white settlers from their territory. The Creeks were the only Southern Tribe that agreed to this, and it resulted in a prolonged period of bloodshed.

In 1812, the United States declared war with England. This war in the South Eastern Mississippi Territory consisted primarily of fighting the Creeks who were allies of the British. Sam led a company in the first battle at Burnt Corn where he was seriously wounded.

Following this, Sam assumed command of Fort Madison in the forks of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers and successfully defended it against overwhelming odds. Here he developed an ingenious method to illuminate the fort's perimeter at night.

Two events during the War of 1812 secured Sam's everlasting fame. The first was "The Great Canoe Fight." The second was his eight-day nonstop journey to New Orleans to deliver a message to Gen. Andrew Jackson.

In "The Great Canoe Fight," Sam got into a canoe with three other soldiers in order to intercept a canoe with a dozen Indians who were fighting for the British. When the canoes came together, Sam jumped into the canoe with the Indians and engaged them in mortal combat. He killed eight Indians using his bayonet and the rifle as a club. He received a knife wound and a dislocated shoulder. This was witnessed by approximately 50 soldiers on the riverbank, who were powerless to help. This event was later verified before the Alabama Legislature.

Dale commanded troops in other battles that added to his respect as a great soldier, including the battle of Eccanachaca or "The Holy Ground" in present day Butler County, Alabama on the Alabama River.

For the remainder of the war, Dale served under the command of Gen. Jackson, and they became very good friends.

In December 1814, Dale was at the Creek Agency at Milledgeville, Georgia when a dispatch arrived from the Secretary of War for Gen. Jackson. Gen. Jackson was believed to be in New Orleans dealing with the expected invasion by the British.

Benjamin Hawkins, the Creek Agent, and Gen. McIntosh strongly urged Dale to deliver the dispatch. Dale traveled by horse from Milledgeville and arrived in New Orleans in time to witness the climax of this famous of battle. Jackson was incredulous to learn that Dale had ridden the same horse the entire distance in eight days.

At the request of Gen. Jackson, Dale then returned on the same horse to Milledgeville with a dispatch to the Secretary of War recounting the details of the victory at New Orleans.

Dale returned to his home at Dale's Ferry in what is present-day Monroe County, Alabama. As a further demonstration of the trust that he had earned, Gov. Holmes appointed him Colonel of the Militia, county tax assessor and collector and commissioner to determine beat lines, voting precincts and responsibility to appoint all civil officers and to take the census in the county.

As stated earlier, he was a delegate to the convention to divide the Mississippi Territory and was elected to the Alabama Territorial Legislature. He was also named Brigadier General of the State Militia.

Sam eventually settled in Lauderdale County at Daleville, a town named for him, on two sections of land that he purchased from the Choctaw, Iacha-hopa.

He was elected to the Mississippi Legislature in the first election involving Lauderdale. He lived at Daleville until his death in 1841. A monument rests over his grave with a lifelike statue of him.
