THE MATTHEW M. McALILEY FAMILYMatthew M. McALILEY (7 Mar 1825 Chester Co SC - 19 Feb 1901Geneva Co AL) is believed to be the first son of John and Mary(McCLINTOCK) McALILEY. In a Bible given to James Harold McALILEY by his mother, LauraBell (JOHNSTON) McALILEY, she recorded Matthew's middle name asMcLANEY. William Samuel McALILEY II speculates that becauseMatthew's maternal grandfather was Matthew McCLINTOCK, that thisMatthew's middle name was McClintock, which was a common namingpractice. All public records found to date list only the initial,'M.'Matthew evidently moved to Gadsden Co FL about 1846, the sametime his parents did, and he married Spicey PICKETT (28 Feb 1825FL - 23 Aug 1851 FL?) on 12 Dec 1848 and had two childrenaccording to their family Bible. After Spicey died, Matthew married Lavinia (STEEL) HALL GRIZZARD(cir.1823 - Dec 1855) on 30 Sep 1852 and had one child. Laviniawas twice a widow and already had three sons and one daughter:Charles HALL born cir.1843, John C. GRIZZARD born cir.1846, JamesP. GRIZZARD born cir.1848, and Lavinia GRIZZARD born cir.1850. InGadsden Co FL, Book A, page 242, the following condensed documentwas recorded in 1853:Know all men by this deed that I John B. HALL - do by thisdeed sell, convey, and forever quit claim unto Luvenia STEEL -the land now occupied and owned by me in Yazoo Co MS - Section35 & 36, Township 9, Range 4 West - and the house there on;also the following Negro slaves: Daniel, Cary, Harriet,Adline, Little Daniel, Ned, Charlotte, Easter, RosettaPleasant, Mary Sally, & Benn; also all the stock and householdfurniture; and the farming utensils about the plantation. Allis done for the consideration of love and affection, and thatthe said Luvenia STEEL shall marry the said HALL. Signed 14Sep 1840 by John B. HALL.Lavinia's second husband was Henderson GRIZZARD born cir.1822 TN,son of John GRIZZARD born cir.1790 TN and his wife Frances borncir.1792 TN.In Liberty Co FL, Deed Book A, page 1, dated 19 Feb 1857, Matthewsold two parcels of land to the County Commissioners for $50. Onewas for 36-1/2 acres and the other was for 21-1/2 acres.According to the County Tax Office, this land is where the Cityof Bristol, FL was established.Matthew married his third wife, Barbara FINLEY (14 May 1838 SC -14 ? 1865), on 2 Jul 1857 in Liberty Co FL and had threechildren. Recorded in Liberty Co FL, Deed Book 1, pages 8-10, dated 10 Nov1857, Matthew, for the sum of $1 paid by Paul DESMUKES, sold hisreal and personal property, including: one brown horse, onesorrel horse mule, one black horse mule, one black mare mule, andthe present crop of cotton, tobacco, and corn made in the year1857. Also a certain track of land in Liberty Co FL known asForbes Purchase, where Matthew then lived. This indenture was tocover his indebtedness to the following:Paul DESMUKES for $37.19 plus 8% interest. The following Executions held by Paul DESMUKES:R.M. BAKER for $695.79 - Judgement rendered 2 Oct 1855 -balance due $261.00.John ERSKINE for $91.44 - Judgement rendered 9 Oct 1856.John ERSKINE for $106.40 - Judgement rendered 7 Oct 1856.William S. DILWORTH for $91.44 - Judgement rendered 8 Oct1856.Charles A. HENTZ for $65.60 - Judgement rendered 7 Oct1856.If Matthew could pay his debts, this indenture was to be null andvoid. Note that he did not pay any taxes in 1856 or 1857. During the Civil War, Matthew reportedly served in McGRIFF's Co.,11th GA Cavalry, GA State Guard; however, search of GA MilitaryRecords failed to confirm this. A family story says that when hecame home from the war, his wife had died and he found the blackslaves had moved into the house and the woman was wearing hiswife's jewelry. Matthew reportedly killed one or more of them andfled the state, going to GA where he married Sallie J. EDWARDS (7Aug 1828 Putnam Co GA - 6 Nov ?) on 4 Jan 1866 in Bainbridge GA.Sallie had been married to Horatio M. EDWARDS and had an adopteddaughter, Rebecca Frances BATEMAN who married Jesse R. Angus was elected to cook when the oldcook died. The men wanted biscuits & he had never madethem. They got a barrel of flour and he started mixingflour and water with one hand, soon he had both handstangled in the dough. Soon he went to the river andthrew the dough over a bush to get loose from it. Helearned to cook - I figure grandmother taught him. When Angus and one of his brothers crossed the St JohnsRiver in or near Palatka FL in a boat they saw two smallbear cubs. They left there boat and each grabbed one andran for the boat. Before they reached the boat a largeMama bear was after them. They turned the cubs loose andgot away.Angus was about 17 or 18 when he was chosen to drive twohorse or ox-drawn log carts to Orlando FL fromSellersville AL. After traveling all day and into thenight without finding water, he gave up and made camp.About 11:00 p.m. he was awakened by beautiful music. Hethought he had died and gone to heaven. He saw a lightas the music got louder and within 100 yards of him asteam excursion boat passed on the Swanee River. He tookhis team down to the water to drink and about an hourlater, the boat came back by. He spent two weeks on thattrip by himself.James Harold McAliley recalls sitting out front at hisUncle Angus' among elders when a hunched back Negrogentleman, who was called Uncle Henry, came along. UncleHenry bowed very politely and said "good morninggentleman." Uncle Angus bowed very politely and returnedthe greeting. From Robert Edward Lee McALILEY's family Bible, there wasapparently a daughter born dead in 1865, which most likely wasthe cause of Barbara (FINLEY) McALILEY's death.

He was a house carpenter. He was Court Clerk in Liberty Co FL and in Geneva Co
AL. He was also a farmer. He reportedly served in the Civil War, however
records have not been found by this resercher. He married four times. His third
wife had inherited at least 18 slaves from Mr. Hall, her late husband. He paid
taxes in Gadsden Co FL as early as 1846. By 1870 he had moved his family to AL.
His middle name was most likely McClintock, however in an old family Bible
belonging to his son, his name is listed as Matthew McLaney McALILEY, but who
wrote the name in and when is unknown to those now living.

My major families are TORBERT, GORDY, FAULL, ELLINGTON, & McALILEY & JOHNSTON
