From the book, "Columbus County, North Carolina: Recollections and Records", edited by Ann Courtney Ward Little:
Benjamin farmed. During the Civil War, he hauled goods from Fayetteville to Clarendon by wagon. He followed the Old Stake Road which came near Clarendon on its route from Fayetteville to Georgetown. He and his first wife Gemima Soles (1811-1862), were the parents of ten children: Linza Ann (m. Moses Williams), Celia Jean (m. E. J. Buffkin), Betsy Jane (m. Samuel Garrell), Dorcas, Marshall M. (m. Evaline Spivey), Cashwell, Elisha J., Anzaline (m. John William Ward), B. Frazier, and Nancy (m. Needham
Stephens). The second wife, Prudence Garrell (1821-1885), was the mother of Hugh Gaston Harrelson (1863-1936) and Patience. Benjamin and both wives are buried in the Todd Cemetery, near Clarendon.
The Todd Cemetery is about one-half mile off NC 410, on a dirt road back of the Clifton Stephens house. It was surveyed in November 1983 by Kay Duncan and Anita Barfield. It was large, well-kept and still in use at the time of the survey. There were some broken stones and a few unmarked graves.
In 1855, Benjamin was a charter member of the Mill Branch Primitive Baptist Church and served as the clerk. During the Civil War, he hauled provisions from Fayetteville to Clarendon.
