1880 Columbus Co., NC census - Lee's Township
Family #288
James W. Gore, 43
Eliza E., 52, wife
Charity Jones, 9, adopted daughter
In the 1900 Columbus County, census of Lee`s Township, James W. Gore, is listed as head of household # 112, with his wife Eliza E., they are listed as married 30 years and as having had no children living or dead. Living next door to him is a Rebecca Phelps. See notes on both.
In the 1910 Columbus County, census of Lee`s Township, James W. Gore, is listed as head of household # 357, with his wife Eliza E., they are listed as married 52 years and Eliza, is listed as a having had 5 children with No living. But in the household is a Mary E. and her husband Joseph T. Hayes. Mary E., is listed as a daughter of James W. Gore and Eliza. I believe that Mary E., is an adopted daughter, who is really the daughter of Rebecca Phelps.
Mary E., is listed as 25 years old and Eliza E., is listed as 84, so she would have been past child bearing age when Mary, was born. More research needed on this.
In the 1920 Columbus County, census of Lee`s Township, John W. Gore, is living in the household of Joseph T. Hayes and his wife Mary E., He is listed as a widow and as the father in law of Joseph T. Hayes.
Living next door is Malcom J. Fowler and his wife Annie B.

!DEATH DATE: (From The People of Columbus, p 168) Died between Aug-Nov 1863 terms of Columbus Co. Court of P's & Q's, for in the November 1863 term his widow Nancy applied for pension for year's allowance. During the same term a "minor heir" of Joseph B. Gore is noted as Sarah E. Gore and James W. Gore posted bond when named by the court as her guardian. She may have been a grandaughter, as Joseph B. Gore and his wife were both over 65 at that time. She does not show in the 1850 or 1860 censuses, so she appears to have been very young.
!ESTATE: February 1864 Columbus Co Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions (quoted in the People of Columbus, p 169-170) - division of slaves. The Commissioners state that they met in December, 1863,
which therefore indicates Joseph Gore probably died late in 1863. He left 33 slaves. Commissioners signing the Petition for Division of Slaves were G. P. Formyduval (lawyer); J. H. Gore; Jesse S. Cox.
