Life Sketch of Margaret Elizabeth Wylie Maddox
MARGARET ELIZABETH WYLIE MADDOX-"Nana"
Mother of Rhoda Emmaline Maddox
(Written by Jeanine Wright Smith-great-great granddaughter)
The story of the William Alfred Nix and Rhoda Emmaline Maddox family would not be complete without including "Nana"--Rhoda's mother. Rhoda never knew her father, Wilson W. Maddox. He died from injuries suffered possibly during the Battle of Chickamauga. Rhoda's family bible states he died September 22, 1863--she would have been 2 years old. No record—Union or Confederate—has ever been found for Margaret Elizabeth Wylie Maddox—however, family knowledge has been passed down that Margaret received a pension—what kind has never been document—all her life.
Rhoda's mother, Margaret Elizabeth Wylie Maddox, was then left a widow at the young age of 28. For the rest of her life, Margaret would cling to her daughter, Rhoda. The two would be inseparable. They looked and thought alike.
W.A. Nix most likely was aware of this mother/daughter partnership when he married Rhoda and obviously accepted it. "Nana," as everyone called her would prove to be a great strength and help to the W.A. Nix family. Her inspiration, example and encouragement was most likely the reason all five of the W.A. Nix children graduated from High School and went on to spend some time in college.
In fact, when the family lived 60 miles from Stiles--
They rented a house in Stiles so the children could all go to school. "Nana"-their grandmother, stayed with them in town during the school season.
John remembers and describes her as being a "rock." He says she was very strict, a very good woman, the best. She read to them every day from the Bible. John had a great love for her, and remembers that he and Henry would take turns fanning her so she would be more comfortable when cancer would, unfortunately, take over her body.
Margaret Elizabeth Wylie Maddox came from a long line of educated, patriotic, religious ancestors. In the thick volume, "Samuel Kelso-1720-1796: Revolutionary patriot of Chester County, South Carolina"--the story of Margaret's strong heritage is told. Her ancestors were the ones who had the courage and made the sacrifices necessary to create this nation. They were also the ones who loved and had faith in God and read and lived the principles found in the Bible. Some in her family were ministers and educators.
While she was gentle in nature, her strength, courage and determination helped mold and shape the W.A. Nix family for the better. They were very fortunate indeed, to have Margaret by their side during those early formative years while they struggled on those isolated ranches of Texas to make a living and raise and educate their children.
Margaret passed away October 29, 1911 in Hylton, Texas. No official government record or gravesite has ever been found for Margaret Elizabeth Wylie Maddox. Her death was recorded in her daughter’s, Rhoda Emmaline’s-- Family Bible, and several letters from family and friends have been found referring to Margaret Elizabeth Wylie’s death. It was an occasion of great reverence and grief for all who knew her.
