He studied forlaw and on May 12, 1520 was made under-sheriff and judge of the sheriff'scourt of London and rose to the post of recorder of London in 1526 andlater served as an ambassador to Denmark. In 1529 he was elected toParliament, where he served the remainder of his life. In 1535 he wasappointed attorney-general and member of the privy council, and in 1545Chancellor the Exchequer. Two years later he became Speaker. He was partof the plot to exclude Mary and Elizabeth from the throne. He marriedElizabeth, daughter and heir of Thomas Dinely, and widow of GoergeBarret, Esq; he had an estate at Sisinghurst, Kent.
