BARONY OF MARMION (II)

JOHN MARMION, LORD MARMION, son and heir, was born circa 1292. In October1313 the name of John Marmyon the younger occurs among those of theadherents of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, who were pardoned for the deathof Piers de Gavaston. As John Marmion le fiz he was summoned for militaryservice against the Scots in 1314, and again, as John Marmion, in 1322and 1323. In August 1322 he had protection for going with the Earl ofRichmond to Scotland; and in October he was appointed a commissioner ofarray for the North Riding. In February 1324/5 he was summoned to passinto Guienne under the command of the Earl Warenne. He was summoned toParliament 3 December 1326, by writ directed Johanni Marmyoun. InSeptember 1327 he was named on a commission of oyer and terminer forYorkshire; and in the same year, with Maud his wife, he made a settlementin special tail male of the manors of Tanfield and Carthorpe. In May 1329he had a protection for three years on going on pilgrimage to the HolyLand. In October 1331 he complained that while he was under the King'sprotection certain persons broke his park at Tanfield, hunted there andcarried away his deer. In July 1332 he was ordered to choose 20 archersfor the King's expedition to Ireland.

He married Maud, who is said to have been a daughter of Thomas, LORDFURNIVALLE (j). He is said to have died 30 April 1335. [Complete PeerageVIII:520-1, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

(j) In 1343 as widow of John Marmyoun, chivaler, she caused a settlementto be made of the manors of West Tanfield, East Tanfield, Carthorpe,Manfield, and Brough, and other specified property, including theadvowsons of West Tanfield and Wath, of the hospital of St. Giles byBrompton Bridge, and the chantries of West Tanfield, Little Langton, andWath; to hold to Maud and the heirs male of her body; remainder to Johnde Grey of Rotherfield and Avice his wife and to John Maryon son of thesaid John and Alice, and the heirs of the bodies of the said John de Greyand Avice; remainder to the heirs of Avice's body; remainder to JohnBernak and Joan his wife, and the heirs of Joan's body; remainder toAvice's right heirs. In 1346 she is described as 'Domina de Marmion';and in 1348 she had licence to crenellate the manor of West Tanfield. Hername was commemorated in "the three chauntereys called Mawde Marmeon inthe parysshe church of Tanfield". On 20 Feb 1361/2 John of Gaunt granteda licence in mortmain for the grant of land in the manors of WestTanfield and Carthorpe to certain chaplains to celebrate in the church ofWest Tanfield for the good of his soul and the souls of John Marmyon andMaude his wife.
