As a young officer, the Duke fought successfully on the side of PrinceEugène of Savoy (1663-1736) against the Turks. Karl I had to take up therule in the principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel unexpectedlyearly. His father, Duke Ferdinand Albrecht II. (1680-1735), the firstruling duke in Wolfenbüttel from the line of Bevern, died after just asix-month reign. As a result of the friendship of his father with thesoldier King Friedrich Wilhelm I (1688-1740) of Prussia, Karl I hadalready married the Prussian princess Philippine Charlotte in 1733. Shewas a sister of Friedrich II the Great (1712-1786) of Prussia. As aresult of the simultaneous marriage of Karl's sister, Princess ElisabethChristine of Braunschweig, to the future King Friedrich II, the friendlyalliance of the two dynasties was underlined. In complete contrast toFriedrich II. of Prussia, the marriage of Karl I with PhilippineCharlotte was generally happy. From his marriage there came thirteenchildren. Under the leadership of the theologian Jerusalem, Duke Karlfounded the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick in 1745. This type ofschool, which became the standard in Germany, became a link between theold Latin school and the university. The students received a moderneducation in the sense of the enlightenment. Even at the beginning ofhis reign the absolute ruling Duke Karl I had to accommodate governmentdealings and his luxurious royal household to the catastrophic financialsituation of the principality. Attempts to reform the economy founderedon a poorly trained civil service apparatus, or they were rejected by theestates of the realm. Thus the duke came to favor the establishment of anew management in the principality. Well-intentioned measures foradvancing the court were not, however, able to cover over the failures. For financial reasons the royal household had to be moved fromWolfenbüttel to Braunschweig. Above all, the Seven Years' War(1756-1763) had a negative impact on the principality of Braunschweig. In1773 hereditary prince Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (1735-1806) took over thebusiness of ruling and deprived his father of power as a result of thefinancial misery in the land.
