From Columbus County, Recollections and Records:
THE SOALS GRANT
Mrs. Josephine Carter Hodge owns the original grant from the State of North Carolina to Joshua Soals for a tract near Lake Tabor. The tract, plotted on August 2, 1788 by John Yates, describes 100 acres on both sides of Grissett Swamp, in Bladen (now Columbus) County. Gov. Richard Dobbs Spaight executed the deed on July 16, 1795. The old seal and wax are still evident (1979). This deed indicate that the area just east of the present Lake Tabor had been surveyed and was already called Grissett Swamp by 1788.
Per Marion McGee: He was born bef. 1768 in Brunswick Co. and died bef. Feb. 1834.
Per Rebecca Tyler Allen: Joshua was b. Bladen Co. part of which becane Columbus Co. in 1808.
