!Generally mistaken for the son of Richard, instead of his younger brother. Two sons: William and Black John. 3rd son of the Great Justiciar by his first marriage; after the death of his father, styled of "Kirkintulloch", but he also had possessions in Galloway and Liddesdale, Dalswynton, and Duncol in Nithsdale, through which he gave the monks of Melrose free passage. Before 1249 he nearly caused a war between Alexander III and Henry III by erecting two castles, one in Galloway, and another at Hermitage in Liddesdale; and again Dalswynton Castle was the chief residence of the Cumyns in Galloway. In 1258 a new office was created for John Cumyn, he was made Justiciar of Galloway, for the Cumyns had great power in Galloway, Mary the sister of Devergoile, having married John Cumyn. Built Blair Castle and was Lord of Strathbolgie. Had four sons and four daughters. [The Bruces and the Cumyns, p. 400, 518]
