[Magna Charta Sureties]------------------------EARLDOM OF HEREFORDHUMPHREY DE BOHUN, son and heir, by 1st wife, had a grant in 1254 as eldest son of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, of 80 marks a year at the Exchequer till the King could provide for him in lands of that yearly value. In 1257 he was among those who assisted his father to keep the marches between Montgomery and the land of the Earl of Gloucester, and in 1263 was ordered to join his father at Hereford to defend the lands and fortify the castles on the marches against Llywellyn. He joined the Barons against the King, and on 23 July 1264 had the custody of the Castle of Winchester, which he was ordered to surrender 3 June 1265. He had also (15 September 1264) the Island and Castle of Lundy, and (17 November 1264) the manor of Havering, Essex. He fought at the Battle of Evesham, 4 August 1265, where he was taken prisoner.He married, 1stly, Eleanor, daughter and coheir of William DE BRIOUZE, of Brecknock, &c., lord of Abergavenny, by Eve, daughter and (in her issue) coheir of William (MARSHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE (n). She was buried at Llanthony by Glouccster. He married, 2ndly, Joan, eldest daughter and coheir of Robert DE QUINCY (youngest son of Saher (DE QUINCY), EARL OF WINCHESTER, by Helen, daughter of Llywellyn AP IORWERTH, PRINCE OF NORTH WALES (b). He died v.p., at Beeston Castle, co. Chester, 27 October 1265 (c), and was buried in Combermere Abbey (d). His widow, who had a grant 9 November 1269 of £40 year1y of lands of the manor of Walton in exchange for her dower of the manor of Kimbolton, died 25 November 1283 (f). [Complete Peerage VI:462-3, XIV:381, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)](n) They had restitution of the lands of Walter (Marshal), Earl of Pembroke, and of the lands of William de Briouze 15 Feb 1247/8, the other coheirs mentioned being Maud, wife of Roger de Mortimer, and Eve, wife of William de Cauntelo, to whom came the lordship of Abergavenny, while Eleanor inherited Brecknock and Hay. No mention is made in the Patent Roll of the other coheir, Isabel, who m. David ap Llywellyn and afterwards Piers FitzHerbert. On 24 Feb 1251/2 appears also a commission for the partition of the lands of William de Briouze to his 3 daughters and coheirs.(b) She was widow of John (le Scot), Earl of Huntingdon and Cambridge, created Earl of Chester.(c) Vigil of SS Simon and Jude after the battle of Evesham.(d) An IPM taken 51 Hen III shows Humphrey, his son and heir by Eleanor, as heir to Hay and Huntingdon castles, &c, co. Hereford. On 12 Nov 1265 Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, and his heirs had a grant of manors in cos. Gloucester, Huntingdon, and Essex, which the Earl by fine had granted to Humphrey de Bohun, his son and heir, to hold to his death to him and his heirs by Joan, daughter of Robert de Quincy, his wife, and which appertained to the King by reason of the trespass and forfeiture which Humphrey made against the King and his son Edward, in adhering to Simon de Montfort, sometime Earl of Leicester, and his partisans, the King's enemies.(f) Her sister Hawise, late wife of Baldwin Wake, was her next heir. See Oswald Barron's 'Northants Families', sub Wake, where it is shown that Joan, wife of Sir Humphrey de Bohun, and Hawise, wife of Baldwin Wake, were heirs to their uncle Roger de Quincy, Earl of Winchester, only in so far as concerned the manor of Steventon, Beds.------------------------Humphrey, a very distinguished person amongst the rebellious barons in the reign of Henry III. In the 47th of that monarch [1263] he was excommunicated, with Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and others, for plundering divers churches and committing sacrilege. He was afterwards one of the commanders of the battle at Lewes, where the king was made prisoner, and was constituted governor of Goodrich and Winchester Castles. In the year following, he commanded the infantry at the battle of Evesham where he fell into the hands of the royalists and was sent prisoner to Beeston Castle in Cheshire, where he soon afterwards died, leaving issue, by his wife Eleanor, dau. and co-heir of William de Braose of Brecknock, and co-heir of her mother Eve, one of the five daus. and co-heirs of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke.
