Patrick Xavier Hearst, 77, of Yazoo City, died Monday, May 10th at the Mississippi State Veterans Home, following a brief illness.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Wesley Hearst; mother, Gertrude Meek Bowles, and eldest son, James Wesley "Cubby" Hearst. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret Goldsmith Hearst; sons Vernon Hearst, Lenny Hearst and Grady Hearst; daughters Patty Thomas, Laura Lowery and Sabrina Hearst; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Waweese Robinett of Fort Worth, TX; Nora Dee Hood of Clinton, MS; Hattie Dell Bunch of Nesbit, MS and Yolanda Fisher of Vaughan, MS.
Following is childhood in Midway, Pat joined the U. S. Army, with which he served two years in Japan and the Phlippines during WWII. Following his Honorable discharge from the Army, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. Pitching and rolling ships didn't sit will with him, however, so he soon returned to Yazoo City where he worked briefly as a roustabout, before settling into maintenance work at Mississippi Chemical Corp. He retired from Mississippi Chemical in 1985, following 32 years of work there.
Throughout his life, Pat's leisure interests and enjoyment were riding bulls, watching rodeos, raising hunting dogs, hunting everything from deer to squirrels, trot-line fishing in the river, growing vegetable gardens and fruit trees, shooting pool, playing craps, retelling old tales, and drinking beer with his friends. He was also a 50 year member of the Grand Masons of Mississippi and a long-time member of the Shriner's Club. As a Shriner he participated in fund-raising events and worked for many years as the popcorn-man at the Shriner's annual concession stand at the Yazoo County Fair.
Although he was not always the easiest person to get along with, Pat was deeply loved and will be missed.
Funeral services for Pat were held May 12, 2004, at Strickland-King Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Haggard and Fr. Noel Prendergast officiating. Burial was at the Midway Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Vernon Hearst, Dustin Hearst, Mike Ellett, Lenny Hearst, Travis Hearst, Dallas Hearst, Shay Hearst and grandson-in-law, Matt Roberts.
