Mary Olive Butler Ratchford
Obituary
Mary Olive Butler Ratchford - GUYTON - If there was ever someone devoted to service, it was Mary Olive Butler Ratchford. She died on February 21, 2009 in her Guyton home that she shared with her husband, Neil. Born on November 16, 1932 to Joe and Glenne Butler in Savannah, GA, Mary Olive would become the eldest of five children, Yvonne (Falagan, Marlow), Terrell (Atlanta), Lee (deceased), and Gene (Buttimer, deceased). Though the family would move to Effingham, Mary Olive would always hold a special place in her heart for Savannah. One positive aspect of coming to Guyton was meeting her future husband, Neil Wilkins Ratchford. Together, they successfully ran the family sausage business. Her sharp business sense was only outmatched by her "toothy" smile as she greeted customers. All the while, she reared four children, Neil Wilkins, Jr. (deceased in 1962), Warren E. (Guyton), Joseph (Mona, Springfield), and Sue Neil (Scott Hinson, Guyton). Her dedication to service in the business and home was reflected as she taught Sunday School and was an active member at Guyton United Methodist. She also acted as treasurer for Guyton Cemetery. Many a local bride chose her to direct the big event because she knew Mary Olive would look after the tiniest detail. Just as her precious grandbabies, Ryan (13) and John (11), were becoming toddlers, the grip of Alzheimer's was beginning to take place. The family would like to thank Cynthia Duncan, Helen Turner, Bertha Mae Best, Sarah Goldwire, Mamie Lee Clarke, Sherry Thomas, and Louise Johnson (deceased) for their ongoing love and devotion in helping "grandma" with her daily needs and keeping her spirits lifted. They have been true comforts for all family and friends. Visitation will be held at from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Riggs Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow in the chapel. Reverend Chip Strickland will officiate, and a graveside service will be held in Guyton Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are members in the Irene Stewart Sunday School Class and Men's Bible Class of Guyton United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be sent to Guyton United Methodist Church's 'Beulah' fund.
