1 NOTE Milton brought his family from Tennessee to Cherokee CountyTexas in 1848. When the Civil War broke out he joined theConfederate forces. He originally joined the 10th Texas Cavalryat the outset of the war. Later he joined the 11th Texas Infantry, along with his son George and William F. and Garret Cornelison. Milton was a lieutenant at the close of his service. The 11th Infantry was formed under the command of theEastern District of Texas, Dept. of Texas, Colonel Oran M. Roberts commanding. The Battle of Bayou Bourbeau was one of their major encounters. On November 1, 1863, they made a rapid fatiguing march from Opelousas, Louisiana, toward Grand Coteau, down Bayou Boeuf. On November 2nd the 11th was ordered forwardtowards the enemy. Colonel Roberts decided to send out two companies from the 15th and Company C of the 11th (Cornelisons), to start skirmishes with the Northerners. Company C was the only outfit in the 11th that had Enfield rifles, so it was important for them to go. The fight lasted for three hours whenthe Confederates finally withdrew. The 11th had four killed, 15 wounded and 32 missing. I don't have figures for the other companies. Union casualties in the whole engagement numbered approximated 716 men. They left Cherokee County sometime after the war and moved to Grayson County, Texas.
