Dear Helen:
I was indeed shocked to learn of Walker’s passing and I’m sure there is no one that can sympathized (sic) with you more sincerely than I. I can never get used to Mr. Burt’s being away and the loneliness grows, but I have so many happy things to remember and realize how much sorrow he has escaped that I feel comforted. I’m sure you will feel the same way after awhile. We have our children to care for and be interested in and you will find with the circle broken the others draw nearer to-gether.
Two years have made great changes with me. The loss of Mr. Burt; John’s enlisting in the Army and Mary Ellen marrying so young. I wonder what will happen to me next. Mary Ellen lives with me. She keeps house and does it very well indeed. She is learning to sew and just now is making some house dresses. I only eat one meal at home – breakfast, and that is very light. I go to work at 11 am and get off at 7 P.M. I like my work. I know so many telephone people and they are so kind to me. We have 300 girls and they treat me like I was their age. I have not missed a day since I began two years ago. I’m always will and that is such a great blessing. I will have two weeks vacation in August but as yet have made no plans.
[back, half page note]
This is not a new style – skipping a page, but I’m accustomed to using paper unfolded.
I may go to see John if he doesn’t come home. He is in the Air Service stationed at Langley Field, VA. He likes it so much but I’m always uneasy. I wish you could see him. He weighs 180, is a blond and lots of people say he looks like me but every body back home thinks he looks like the Burts. Mary Ellen is fair too and looks more like Georgia than anybody. I’d like so much to see you and your family. When you feel like you can, I hope you will write me about Walker and just what your plans are. I have not heard from Nellie in some time but she owes me a letter and it’s time she was answering it. I hope that you are well and may He that doeth all things well speak Peace to your heart.
Sincerely,
Lettie M. Burt
