"With the Fifty Army in Italy, PVT Joseph V Kittrell, son of Mrs Retha Kittrell, of Winterville N C has been cited by his regiment of the 85th "Cluster: Infantry Division and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for actual participation in combat with the enemy while servicing on the Fifty Army front in Italy. Standards for the badge are high. The decoration which was recently authorized by the War Department is awarded to the infantry soldier who has proved his fighting ability in combat. The handsome badge consists of a silver rifle set against a background of infantry blue, enclosed in a silver wreath. The Winterville high school athlete, a rifle scout, located and participated in the destruction of three German machine guns. Before entering the service he was employed at Standard Oil Co. A brother William, is also in the service." Daily Reflector August 19, 1944.
He received the bronze star medal, soldiers medal, and is privileged to wear three battle stars. The Daily Reflector.
