Source: Tom Rudder information provided 1996, indicates that George L. Jessee, son of David, is born 1835, as he is living with his father and his age is indicated as 15 in the 1850 Russell Co. Census. This would make this marriage to Eliza and age of children improbable.
Problem: This George Lea Jessee, son of David, may be confused with another George Lee Jessee, Jr. born abt 1827, who moved to Carter Co. KY aft 1850. See RIN 18687, the alleged son of George L. Jessee Sr., (1798-1882).
My original information showed all the latter children of this George L. Jessee born in Lee, Co. VA, which is contradictory to the information I have recorded here. I have made the assumption that these are one and the same, and that all the latter children were born in Carter Co. KY.
Source: Iris Lambert Hall, Pueblo Co., writes: "There was a George L. Jessee, Jr. b. 1827 in Russell Co., VA, who, by 1850 was 23 years old and living in Carter Co., KY w/wife Eliza and son James R. 1860 Carter Co. Census shows G. L. Jessee as 29 years old with Eliza, James, and Samuel F. (all four b. in VA) , and David M. b. in Kentucky." "A George L. Jessee, born 1827, Russell Co. Va., was married to an Elizabeth (Eliza)they were in Russell Co. in 1850 census and in Carter Co. Kentucky in 1860 census. I have never really found proof just which George Lee he was, who his parents were. One of their children was James R. Jessee, born 1848/49 who, on Feb. 9, 1868 in Carter Co., KY. married Sarah Elizabeth Erwin, dau of Thomas Jefferson and Martha (Stamper) Erwin.
Source: Julia Younce, New Castle, IN, writes (2/13/1997): "I don't have the birth and death dates on my great-grandparents and wonder if her name was Mary Elizabeth instead of Mary Eliza kiser. My Dad, Mason Jessee, always said his Dad David Martin was born in Carter Co., KY and all of their children were born there. They lived at Grahn, KY for years, then moved to Upper Tygart, KY .... Some of the family spell their name Jessie. Dad went into the army in 1917 and they put on his records, Mason Jessee, and he used that spelling for the rest of his life. My parents moved to IN in 1943. There wasn't any jobs except mostly mining where we lived in KY. We came to New Castle to find jobs.
My grandpa David M. was a blacksmith."
This George L. Jessee of Carter Co., KY may be the one involved in the "Great Train Robbery."
Source: Tom Rudder, Carmichael CA, (5/30/1997) provides materials to prove that 1)a George L. Jessee Jr. is recorded in the 1850 Russell Co. Census, #579, age 23 with wife Eliza, age 18, and James R. age 10 months, all born in Russell Co.; 2) an extract of Russell Co. Deeds, Book 12 Pg. 340, recording a deed of trust, 8/10/1849, grantor George L. Jessee Jr., grantee Joshua M. Fields, 28 acres, Castlewood;
3) a copy of the George L. Jessee (1798-1882) will, and settlement of his estate. Tom suggests that since George L. Jessee (1798-1882) signed his will George L. Jessee Sr., this implies there is a George L. Jessee Jr., who would be his son. There is no other evidence that George L. Jessee had a son George L. Jr, born in 1827, most notabley this is not recorded in the authoritive source of information on this family, "John Counts of Glade Hollow," by. E. J. Sutherland.
