Born near Washington, Wilks co, Ga. Parents were Oliver W. and Sarah
Frances Hemphill. In 1890, he accompanied his widowed mother, five
brothers and a sister toPanola Co., TX. He married Amy Bradley Womack
near Woods, Panola Co. TX, Dec 3, 1903. They moved from Texas to settle
at a farm six miles northeast ofFrederick, Tillman, Co. OK in the fall
of 1906. He and Amy had two sons, Alton Bradley b. 1904 and John Wilborn
b. 1907 and three daughters Etta Louise b. 1911, Mary Frances b. 1914 and
Amy Arlene b. 1921. The Hemphills also raised two boys, John and Richard
Hinson, whose Mother could not care for them.They came with Lem by
wagon from east Texas. Amy came later by train with son Alton while
pregnant with John. At first they lived in a half dugout. Onthe farm,
they built a house and barn, raised wheat, had a large garden, cows,
chickens and horses. There was only one tree on the farm, a Mesquite in
the front yard. They used a cistern in the rear of the house for water
and never had inside plumbing. They did get get natural gas service
about 1930 when son Alton, who worked for the Lone Star Gas Co. in
Dallas, TX, surveyed apipeline across the southeast corner of their farm
(within 50 feet of the farmhouse). REA electric service came in about
1944. Lem retired from farmingin August 1945 and moved to 412 N. 13th
St. in Frederick, OK.
Lem became amember of the Methodist Church at age 14. He served as
superintendent of arural Sunday School and for several years as a member
of the School board forhis district. He was a Director of the Tillman
Co. National Farm Loan Association. He was a member of the Woodmen of
the World.
He had high blood pressure and suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed
for some time.
