Gold and Margaret Palmer. His father was the son of Daniel Gold and

Jenkins. His mother was the daughter of Dr. Valentine J. Palmer and Mary
Bedford, the daughter of Joseph Bedford and Nancy Elliott, daughter of
John
Crenshaw Elliott and Mary Donoho. He was one of six children: Mary
Catherine,
"Kate"; Joseph Christopher, "Joe"; William Jackson; Margaret Belle; Lucy
Jane;
and Thomas Rowell Gold.

Joe Gold married Julia Ann Elliott, "Julia", daughter of Thomas Forbis
Elliott, "Tommy", and Vertie Irene Mauney, "Vertie", on October 14, 1908.
Julia was also descended from John Crenshaw Elliott, who purchased 1, 300
on
Hinton's Creek, in what was then Rutherford County. John Crenshaw
Elliott had
six sons: William Martin, John Paxton, Thomas F., Edward Donoho, Andrew
Jackson, and James Finch Elliott; and four daughters: Susan, Elizabeth
Donoho,
Nancy, and Mary F. Elliott.

Julia was descended from John Paxton Elliott, while Joe was descended from
Nancy Elliott. John Paxton Elliott had six sons: Christopher Beam,
Thomas
Forbis, Oliver Beam, John Daniel, Andrew Jackson, and Robert Lafayette
Elliott;
and four daughters: Mary Donoho, Margaret Gordon, Ann Elizabeth, and Susan
Elliott. As indicated earlier, Thomas Forbis Elliott was Julia's father.

After John Crenshaw Elliott died, his wife deeded the community an acre
for the
school and an acre for the church. John Crenshaw Elliott and many of his
descendants, including Nancy Elliott Bedford, Dr. Valentine J. Palmer,
and John
Paxton Elliott, are buried in the Elliott family cemetery near Polkville.

The descendants of John Crenshaw Elliott have a family reunion at the
Elliott
Church near Polkville on the Saturday preceding the fourth Sunday in
August.
The family historian posts the family tree on the side of the church; and
the
cousins share a potluck picnic lunch; discuss family businees, including
operation of the Elliott cemetery and maintenance of the Elliott Church;
renew
family ties; and refer to the family trees to trace their relationships
with
newcomers. It is a great heritage.

Joe and Julia had nine children, six boys and three girls, who were born
in the
following order: Milton Elliott, "Milton"; Thomas Palmer, "Palmer";
Margaret
Rebecca, "Margaret"; Benjamin Bedford, "Ben"; Griffen Bell, "Griffin";
Mary
Susan, "Mary"; Lemuel Hoyle, "Hoyle"; Joseph Christopher, Junior, "Joe";
and
Julia Ann, "Julia". Mary died when she was two years old, and Margaret
died
when she was thirty. The others lived to middle or old age.

Joe and Julia raised their family on a farm near Polkville. The children
attended public schools in Polkville. All six boys: Milton, Palmer, Ben,
Griffin, Hoyle, and Joe drove trucks for Carolina Freight Carriers
Corporation
of Cherryville, North Carolina, hauling general commodities freight in
interstate commerce. Joe drove for over 39 years. The others retired
after
about 30 years of driving. They also married and raised families. Julia
married Joe Queen, who worked for Cleveland Mills in Lawndale, North
Carolina.

During World War II, Ben served in the South Pacific with an amphibious
tractor
(Amtrack) battalion, and Hoyle served in the European Theater as an
airplane
mechanic with the Air Transport Command. Griffin joined the partnership
that
operates the Western Steer Family Steak House in Shelby after he quit
driving a
truck.

Joseph Christopher Gold, "Joe", was born on May 19, 1881, on his father's farm in Cleveland County, North Carolina, the son of William Milton Gold and Margaret Palmer. His father was the son of Daniel Gold and Margaret Jenkins. His mother was the daughter of Dr. Valentine J. Palmer and Mary Bedford, the daughter of Joseph Bedford and Nancy Elliott, daughter of
