Mr. Berry Wilson Lee 83, of 116 Berry Drive, died on Jan. 8, 2004, at Hospice of Wendover. He was born in Twiggs County, Ga. and was the son of the late Charlie and Belvie Jones Lee. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Osborne Lee, Olin Lee, and Howard Lee.
Berry was drafted into the Army in 1943 and was sent to Camp Croft S.C., where he was inducted. After a short leave home, he went to Fort Bragg where he was assigned to the 97th Infantry. He was transferred to Camp Swift in Texas. From there he went on maneuvers in the swamps of Louisiana. He was also stationed at Fort Leonardwood Mo., San Luis Obispo, Calif., Fort Meade, Md., and New York where he boarded a ship bound for England and across the English Channel. Once across the channel, Berry went to France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Czechoslovakia. By this time World War II was in full swing and, as with all wars, Berry saw a lot of action; many lives were lost. Freedom doesn’t come without a price. Among Berry’s many accomplishments in the service are: Bronze Star for heroic action, Eamet Campaign medal with three bronze stars, Good Conduct medal, and Bronze Star Infantry Division. He was in the combat infantry and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a staff sergeant when he received an honorable discharge in 1945.
Berry made his career in law enforcement and was the past President of N.C. Law Enforcement Association. He was a 33 year veteran of the Shelby Police Department and his positions were marking tires, desk sergeant, investigator and chief of police. Berry also worked security for eight years at PPG and also managed the Farmer’s Market. He was the winner of Gentlemen’s Corner Best Dressed Man Contest in 1972. Berry was a dedicated Christian and has been a member of Eastside Baptist Church where he served on the board of deacons and the chairman of the deacon board.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucille Doty Lee. Together they raised two children who admire and love their parents, a son Donald and wife Mary Evans Lee of Kings Mountain; a daughter Judy Mae Lee Jones and husband William Thomas of Belmont; a sister Frances McSwain of Lattimore; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kim and Jeffery Morris of Thomasville, Brian and Carolyn Lee of Lattimore, Ginger and Jeremy Fern of Boiling Springs; and three great grandchildren, Gina Morris, Andy Morris, and Evan Lee.
Services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Leland Kerr officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, and other times at the home. Pallbearers will be the officers of the Shelby Police Department and honorary pallbearers will be the T.W. Bray Sunday school class.
