Kind(er):
Alexander Green was born, according to tradition, on his father Elias' farm about one mile north of Ansel Post Office, established in 1886, was named for his brother, Ansel Lafayette Wood. to his home folks and neighbors, Alexander Green Wood was known as "Green". No one thought of the Alexander in his name which was probably for his uncle, Alexander Adams. His early life was spent on his father's farm, and as there were few schools in those days, it is fair to assume that his education was very meager. On the 13th of January, 1853, he was married to Mary A. Harrison. To this union two children were born; Nancy Jane and Joel P. Nancy died in the early 1870's. Joel was known as "Bud" and in early life went ot Kansas. After Alexander's marriage to Mary Harrison, they moved to Somerset, the county seat of Pulaski Co., Ky. and went into business. He was, for a time, possessed of considerable peoperty consisting of real estate. During the Civil War he was located on the south side of the public square where Tandy's Barber Shop was located in the 1940's. It seems that a good part of his business was selling intoxicating liquors. (See account of Col. Silas Adams) He died July 1, 1865, and at the time of his death, according to the records, his estate was in a very tangled condition. It appears that he had been doing much crediting, and that he had worthless accounts scattered all over the country. He had quite a substantial bit of personal property and some valuable lots in Somerset. However, when his estate was settled, his creditors received only 57% of their claims. It seems likely, that he, himself, was one of the best customers at his saloon, and that much of the cause of his death was due to drinking too much. He and his wife are probably buried in the Old Cemetery, in Somerset.
