Kind(er):
Grandmother, was a women of medium size and must have been quite active
in her prime. Very neat in her person. Intelligent. Industrious. She was
very dedicated in her religious life and he intercourse with the world.
I t was the greatest treat of our childhood to have her visit or to go to
her house.
Grandfather ( John service ) died two years after the last child was
b orn, leaving Ann with eleven children, two were married. The struggle
was hard, but she did well with the help of her , oldest son Robert, who
remained with her until she resettled in Indiana ten or twelve years
later. The Indiana farm was one mile south of Smithville. Robert returned
to South Carolina to m arry Sarah McCraw and returned to a farm next to
Ann.
Son, Moses, also staye d with his mother until the Civil War when they
sold the farm and moved to Bl oomington. IN.
Leaving the South in 1836 to get away from the curse of slavery , she
lived to see one son, two son-in-laws, ten grandsons, and at least four
boys who later married her granddaughters, helping to wipe the curse of
the nation and return home victorious. Only one was wounded. A remarkable
record considering they were all from different states and in different
parts of the army. Nearly all saw hard service.
