Harriet Pressly Johnston, 78, of 6100 W. Friendly Ave., Friends Home West, Greensboro, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Friends Home West.A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. Dr. Sid Batts will officiate.
Harriet was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Raleigh, to William Cornelius Pressly and Harriet Byrne Pressly. She graduated from Peace College and North Carolina State University, and was inducted into the Gamma Sigma Epsilon, Phi Theta Kappa, and Sigma Xi honorary societies. Her life was devoted to her family and friends, and to many volunteer efforts. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, where she served as an elder. As a volunteer at Wesley Long Hospital she provided coffee and comfort to patients for nearly thirty years. She served on the Board of Trustees for Glade Valley School and for Lees McRae College, and on the Board of Visitors for Peace College. In 1983, Peace College honored her with their Distinguished Alumna award. At Friends Home she chaired the Health Committee, and served on the committee that planned and built the Wellness Center. She delighted in spending time with her friends and her family, in travel, and in serving others. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother; as a caring friend; and as a kind and generous lady who made a difference in peoples lives.
