"To all to whom these presents shall come, greeting, Know he
that I, JAMES HOLDER, and I, ELIZABETH [GILMAN] HOLDER, of
the county of Johnston and State of North Carolina, planter,
for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and sixty
five pounds current money of this state to us in hand paid
by JOHN KITTRELL of Bertie County and State aforesaid the
receipt whereof I the said JAMES HOLDER and I the said
ELIZABETH HOLDER hereby acknowledge our selves therewith
fully satisfied contented and paid have given granted sold
bargained conveyed and confirmed unto him the said JOHN
KITTRILL his heirs executors administrators and assigns for
ever one messuage or tenement of land situate in Bertie
County and state aforesaid contain two hundred acres more or
less to wit belonging [beginning] at a white oak the said
JOHN KITTRELL corner running up the said line to a line of
marked trees marked by consent of the former owner of said
lands thence along the said line to COLLIN POLLOCK's line
thence along down said POLLOCK's line to his corner tree
that stands in a swamp called Little Roquist thence up the
said swamp to the first station it being the tract or parcel
of land that was formerly sold and conveyed by JOHN BENTLY
[BENTLEY] to JOSIAH GRIFFIN all the said lands aforesaid
rights previledges hereditaments & appurtenances thereunto
belonging unto him the said JOHN KITTRILL his heirs and
assigns and unto their only proper use benefit and behoof of
him the said JOHN KITTRILL his heirs executors
administrators & assigns forever in clear & ample manner to
all intents and purposes whatsoever charged from widows
jointer dowrys and all encumbrances whatsoever I the
aforesaid JAMES HOLDER and I ELIZABETH HOLDER do warrant
secure and defend the aforesaid land unto the siad JOHN
KITTRILL in manner and above mentioned in Witness whereof I
the said JAMES HOLDER & ELIZABETH HOLDER have hereunto set
our hands and affixed our seals this 17th day of February in
the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty
six and in the tenth year of our independance. JAMES HOLDER,

Bertie County February Term 1786 The within deed from JAMES
HOLDER & ELIZABETH HOLDER to JOHN KITTRELL was proved in
open court in due form of law by the oath of ANDREW OLIVER
and ELISHA RHODES two of the subscribing withnesses and
ordered to be registered. STEVENS GRAY CC"
NOTE: This is the same land conveyed, on the same day, to
James Holder by Harberd Gilman, both formerly of Bertie but
by now of Johnston Co., NC. James' wife is Elizabeth Gilman.
James and Elizabeth paid Harberd 100 pounds and then sold it
to John Kittrell for 165 pounds. I believe that Harberd and
Elizabeth may have been siblings and that this is land
inherited by them. Probably at the death of their mother.
