Caroline Bradley Garner McLaughlin, 85, died March 18, 2009, at The Pines at Davidson after an extended illness. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon at The Pines and a memorial service is planned Monday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church in Charlotte. (Details below.)
She was born April 28, 1923, in Union, S.C., to Edwin Maurice Garner and Mary Klugh Garner. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and Woman’s College (UNC Greensboro) with a major in business in 1945. Upon graduation she worked as a medical secretary before marrying John Mason McLaughlin in 1947.
Caroline’s life was devoted to her many friends and family. Gardening, sports, and cooking were her passions. Birds, bridge, and investments were keen interests. She was an active member of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church for over 40 years and a volunteer at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital. Upon retiring to Lake Norman, she became a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mooresville and continued as a volunteer at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lindsay and Sandy Jordan of Raleigh, Jean McLaughlin and Tom Spleth of Penland, Susan and Dorlin Kerr of Mooresville, and Caroline McLaughlin and Roy Baroff of Pittsboro; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her sister Mary Garner Tindal of Holly Hill, SC, and many special cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her brother Edwin Maurice Garner.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at The Pines, Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman, and her doctors for their kindness, generous attention, and expert care.
A memorial service will be held Monday, March 23, at 11:00 am at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church. Internment will be in Evergreen Cemetery at 12:30 pm. The family will receive friends at The Pines of Davidson on Sunday, March 22, at 5:00 pm.
