   Dr. Harriet Anne Hathaway went peacefully with dignity and grace to Heaven in the morning of Sunday, December 4, 2016, two days after her 68th birthday. A native of Sunbury, Gates County, North Carolina, Anne was born in the early morning on December 2, 1948, in Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia.
   
   Anne is a daughter of the late former North Carolina State Representative Clarence Percival Hathaway, Jr. and Mrs. Hathaway, the late Alice Payne. She is a granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Percival Hathaway, Sr., formerly of Sunbury, and of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Absalom Payne, Jr., formerly of Walnut Hill Farm, Lignum, Culpeper County, Virginia.
   
   Anne attended Sunbury Elementary School and graduated from Gates County High School, Gatesville, North Carolina. She was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.
   
   Dr. Hathaway graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, receiving a B.A. in Elementary Education with a 4-9 Intermediate Mathematics Concentration (1971); M.L.S. Educational Media and Instructional Technology (1978); and Ed.D. Curriculum and Teaching Mathematics Cognate (1983). While an undergraduate student, Anne was inducted into the Golden Chain Honor Society.
   
   In Guilford County Schools, Dr. Hathaway taught 7th grade Mathematics and Science at Northeast Junior High School and was a K-12 Mathematics Supervisor. Anne was a K-12 Regional Mathematics Coordinator in the Southeast Regional Education Center, with the NC Department of Public Instruction in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
   
   At Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina, Dr. Hathaway was Department of Education Coordinator; an Associate Professor of Education and Director of Teacher Education Division of Social Sciences; and the Founding Dean of the School of Education.
   
   At Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, Dr. Hathaway was an Associate Professor of Education; Acting Chair of the Department of Education; Interim Dean of the School of Education; the Founding Dean of the Tift College of Education; Professor Middle Grades and Mathematics Education Tift College of Education; Assessment Coordinator; and most recently, Director Ph.D. Programs Tift College of Education.
   
   Anne presented on local, state, regional, national, and international levels. She was published in textbooks/curriculum materials, book chapters, journal/magazine articles, and was author/writer of other educational materials. Anne was a researcher, principle and co-investigator, and co-author of grants/funded projects. She designed and re-designed courses at Tift College of Education. Among Anne's many Professional and Academic Association Memberships, she was a member of the National Council of Teachers for Mathematics, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Phi Kappa Phi.
   
   Dr. Hathaway was the 2016 recipient of the Cathryn Futral Excellence in Teaching Award as an inspirational and exceptional professor in the Tift College of Education at Mercer University.
   
   Dr. Hathaway was a direct Mayflower descendant of Richard Warren and Francis Cooke, signers of the Mayflower Compact, and a direct descendant of Captain George Lee Waugh who was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. She adored her family and all of her connections.
   
   Anne was a mathematician, a scientist, a genealogist, and a voracious reader with a love of music, the piano, and the beach. She grew up vacationing at Nags Head, North Carolina, and dancing at the Casino. Her love of the Tidewater area, her childhood home, was palpable.
   
   Dr. Hathaway is survived by a brother, Clarence Percival Hathaway, III, and spouse Amy Harrier Hathaway of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a sister, Constance Amelia Hathaway Pendergrass and spouse, Donald Steele Pendergrass of Carrboro, North Carolina; a niece, Blake Hathaway Mailhes and spouse Albin Roland Mailhes, III, of Virginia Beach; a nephew, Chase Percival Hathaway and spouse, Heather Slawson Hathaway of San Antonio, Texas; a nephew and Godson, Hathaway Steele Pendergrass and spouse, Katherine LaVange Pendergrass of Carrboro; and a great-niece, Eliza Leigh Pendergrass of Carrboro. Anne is also survived by a loving extended family of Payne-Hathaway-Harrell-Norfleet-Bond-Willey cousins.

   Anne's family would like to thank her friends and colleagues who showered her with loving attention and constant comfort, to include Associate Professor Carolyn Garvin, Dr. Linda Hencel, Dr. Sharon Augustine, Dr. Susan Thornton, Dr. Clay Jolly, and Dr. Lynne Bryan.
   
   The family of Dr. Hathaway would like to thank the Medical Staff of Coliseum Medical Centers ICU for the expert and kind, compassionate care they delivered to Anne, in particular to Dr. Keith Martin, Dr. Lisa Farmer, Dr. D. Kadiyala, Dr. Rebecca Bass, and Dr. Robert Wright, and to all of the Nursing Staff and to the Respiratory Therapists.
   
   Service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016, at 11:30 AM in Anne's childhood church, Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 32 North, Sunbury, North Carolina 27979. Burial will be across the highway behind Damascus Christian Church, in the Hathaway Family Plot. After the service, family and friends will gather in the Fellowship Hall of Damascus Christian Church.
   
   Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is assisting the family with arrangements.
