Notizen bei Mary Jane A. Boyd

Mary Jane Boyd`s date of birth has been listed as February 22, 1878. Thiscould not be true If her brother Daniel C. Boyd (a/k/a Jesse Jamed Boyd)was born in 1878. I feel that she would fit better as the Mary J. A. Boydborn in 1872. I am going to list it as such until proven wrong.(WSH)

The following is from the research work of Ms. Janice Boyd Neal:

I am also about certain that Mary Jane was not Sarah Margaret's daughter
other than step-daughter. I think that she is Mary J.A. of the first
marriage. She's the one that the family (specifically Earl Dean Norris,
daughter of Izzie, child of the second marriage of Robert to Sarah
Margaret) says was one of the children of the first marriage, wasnicknamed
Sugar, married a Porter and moved to GA. I think that in the book they
published in GA her birth date is wrong (1878 is the year Jessie my
grandfather was born), and I think they referred to her as SarahMargaret's
daughter because she was her step mother and raised her. Here is what I
have in my program about Mary Jane:

Mary Jane Boyd has been a mystery. I believe that she is Mary J. A.Boyd,
natural daughter of Robert T. and Sarah Boyd, but she also may be anadopted
child of Robert T. and his second wife, Sarah Margaret. Localgenealogists
have told me that she was an adopted child of the second marriage ofRobert
T. Boyd, Jr., and she is listed in a book on Taylors Creek as thedaughter
of Robert T. and Sarah Margaret, Robert's second wife. That book istitled
"Taylors Creek 1760 - 1986, A Story of the Community and Her People",Bird
and Parul Yarbrough Editors, A Project of Taylors Creek Cemetery
Association. That book, at p. 513 and 514, has the following information
about Mary Jane and her family:

"The Family of Elmore Winage Porter

ELMORE WINGATE PORTER was the second of the Porter Family to
settle at Taylors Creek. His brother, Samuel Pink Porter, came to this
section in 1895. Elmore W. Porter, along with his wife, Mary Jane (Boyd)
Porter, and their three small sons came to Taylors Creek in 1898 fromHorry
County, South Carolina. He was a farmer and the son of William and
Elizabeth Carter Porter, born in Horry County South Carolina, July 9,
1871. His wife was born February 22, 1878 also in Horry County, South
Carolina. She was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Boyd of Horry
County, South Carolina. Elmore died April 6, 1942 at Hinesville,
Georgia. Mary Jane died at Taylors Creek in 1930. Both are buried at
Taylors Creek Cemetery. Eight children were born to this union."

There is a picture of the family with a caption that reads "ElmoreWingate
and Mary Jane (Boyd) Porter with their children: Corbert, Benjamin,
Estelle, and Hebert." The picture of Mary Jane reveals that she had
distinct Indian features.

The reason I think Mary Jane is Mary J. A. is because older half-Boyd
relatives (specifically Earl Dean Wright Norris) told me that there was a
daughter of Robert's first marriage (to Sarah Elizabeth Gore) whose
nickname was "Sugar" who married a Porter and moved to GA. I definitely
believe that Earl Dean would know if Mary Jane was a full-blooded or half
sister of Izzie. If Mary Jane is Mary J. A., then she was probably born
1872, not 1878 (the same year Jessie James Boyd was born). In the 1880
census Mary J. A. was 8, and Jessie James (listed as Daniel C.) was 2.If
born in 1872, Mary Jane would have been 23 when she moved to Taylor'sCreek
with Elmore and their three sons, meaning that she started having her
children around age 17 - 20 (giving a 3 to 6 year span). If she wereborn
in 1878, she would have been 17 when she moved to Taylor's Creek, having
already had three children, requiring her to start having them at age 12-
14 (giving a 3 to 6 year span), which seems less likely. One other item-
Shelby Workmen, granddaughter of Sallie Boyd, older sister of Jessie,
indicates that she was always told that her father's aunt, Mary Jane,
married her mother's uncle, Ellie Porter, and in this context it was
understood that Mary Jane was her father's full-blooded aunt. To be soshe
would have had to have been Sallie's full-blooded sister.

December 4, 1999, I talked with Erline Strickland, the granddaughter of
Elmore and Mary Jane, who indicates that she was 8 - 10 years old whenMary
Jane died. She remembered Mary Jane and Lewis Boyd (child of the first
family), who she referred to as Mary Janes' brother, who lived in
Statesboro, GA, and had a horse and mule farm. Erline remembers her
mother's father going there to buy plowing mules. She did not refer to
Lewis as a half-brother of Mary Jane, a distinction I find often made in
earlier generations as it is today. Erline remembers Mary Jane as
"different looking" and said that the children looked more like the
Porters. I am not sure which son was Erline's father, but I do remember
her saying that he died when Erline was 5 from a tree falling on him.Mary
Jane's daughter, Helen, died at the age of 30 from kidney disease. Shewas
very beautiful. Mary Jane's daughter, Mary, is still living. Lewis hada
daughter named Flossie. End of Program Notes.
