Originally Stationed at the Prins Hendrik Barracks in Nijmegen, Michiel was a private in the infantry of the Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL, Royal Dutch-Indian Army) in Indonesia. He was rounded up by the Japanese Army and died working on the Birma Railroad. He is buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Grave in area 7, row D, nr. 18.
He received a serious head injury during a car accident on the road at Tandjong-Perak (source newspaper: Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indie¨ April 26 1927; pg. 2).
He had married an Indonesian wife. One of the children, Peter, died young. His wife and other children survived the war. His army record in the colonial reserves (folio nr. 9500 in inventory number 2.10.50 in the Dutch national archives shows that he was granted a leave on 7 july 1924 and on 12 july 1932. During this last leave he visited Holland. The name of Family M. Vuurens with 2 children appears on the passagerlist of m.s. Indrapoera which left Batavia on June 15, 1932 (Source Newspaper: De Sumatra post June 15, 1932; pg. 3) Moved to The Hague from Malang with wife and 2 children on July 16, 1932 and moved back to Malang on December 15, 1932.
