Howard James DeBoef was born in Adams Township of Mahaska County, Iowa on Wednesday November 15, 1916 to Henry and Marie VanWyngarden DeBoef. His parents later moved to Oskaloosa, IA so that he could attend Oskaloosa High School and graduated with the class of 1934. He died in the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center early Thursday January 31, 2008.
On October 19, 1938, he married Esther Beulah Schwin at the Central Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, IA. They farmed in Adams Township their entire married life, until retiring and moving to Jefferson Place at the Pella Regional Health Center in June 2005 and later he moved to the Long Term Care Center in February 2007. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.
They had a son, Max James DeBoef that was stillborn on October 23, 1942. They later adopted twins, Don Jay and Sally Kay born on January 13, 1947.
Howard was on the school board at Lacey Consolidated School, for a one-year term, in the early 1950's when they decided to build an addition to the building. He was a long-time member of the Mahaska County Farm Bureau. He had been a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Nazarene Church, and Central Reformed Church, all in Oskaloosa, IA.
Howard is survived by a son and his family, Don Jay, his wife, Janice (Bishop) DeBoef of Oskaloosa, IA. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Heather (and Paul) Carr of Topeka, KS, and Timothy Beyer of Harvey, IA and Scott DeBoef of Oskaloosa, IA, and three great grandchildren, Brittney, McKenna and Cameron Beyer of Bussey, IA. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Margaret Schwin of Eugene, OR, Esther Schwin of Kimberling City, MO and Dolores Schwin of Sun City, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Esther on October 17, 2006, a son, Max James DeBoef, in infancy, a daughter, Sally Kay Beyer, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur H and Gertie DeBoef and Lester and Gertrude DeBoef, his parents-in-law, Conrad and Jennie Hahn Schwin, his brothers-in-law, William Leonard Schwin, Carl Edwin Schwin and Paul Shirley Schwin.
The funeral service will be held at the Bates Funeral Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Monday February 4, 2008 with the Rev Donald DeGlopper of the Central Reformed Church officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, IA. Memorials are designated to either Central Reformed Church or Hospice of Pella.
