BARONY OF MONTAGU (I)

JOHN DE MONTAGU, younger son of William (DE MONTAGU) 1st EARL OF SALISBURY, by Katherine DE GRANDISON, was born in London, and baptixed in St. Paul's.  Having married Margaret, daughter and heir of Thomas DE MONTHERMER [LORD MONTHERMER], he had seisin of her lands on 20 December 1343. ; On his father's death he succeeded to the reversion of the manor and castle of Wark-upon-Tweed, and had livery under writ of 17 June 1344. He fought in the campaign in France, 1346-47, in the retinue of his brother the Earl of Salisbury, and then in that of the Prince of Wales, from the time of the landing at La Hogue, 12 July 1346 at the battle of Crécy, 26 August, and at the siege of Calais, which fell 4 August 1347.  On 28 August 1354, as Dominus de Werk, he, with other magnates, joined the Prince of Wales in appointing proxies to treat with France; and before October of that year was a knight of the Prince's household. ; He was with the Prince of Wales in France in 1356, and fought on 19 September at Poitiers.  He was summoned to Parliament from 15 December 1357 to 6 December 1389, by writs directed Johanni de Monte Acufo, whereby he is held to have become LORD MONTAGU.  In the autumn of 1359 he went with the Prince again to France, and on his return, from 1361, was appointed on numerous commissions of peace, oyer and termwer, array, &c., in Hants and Devon.  He made a grant in October 1365 to the sacristan of Exeter Cathedral, and in this and the following year received grants from his uncle, John de Grandison, Bishop of Exeter. ; In September 1372, as John de Montagu the father, he was going abroad on the King's service with his brother the Earl of Salisbury for the relief of Rochelle, but the expedition was abandoned.  In July 1373 and in later years he was a commissioner to guard Southampton and the coast.  He was nominated on an embassy to treat with France, 20 February 1376/7, and in July did homage at the Coronation of Richard II in Westminster Abbey; and from then on till his death he was a trier of petitions in Parliament. ; Early in 1378 he was retained to serve the King as a banneret, with a force consisting of another banneret, 5 knights, 53 esquires, and 60 archers, and in July took part in the Duke of Lancaster's abortive attack on St. Malo.  When the peasants revolted in Essex in June 1381, he was charged with making proclamations against such risings in Hants and Wilts, and to deal with any insurgents escaping from Kent.  As Steward he was one of the three members of the King's household deputed in December to receive Anne of Bohemia on her arrival in England for her marriage with Richard II.  In June 1382 he was appointed to survey the castle of Marlborough, and in September 1384 sat with two judges at the Tower in connection with disturbances in the city.  At the end of that year he had a dispute with his brother William, Earl of Salisbury, which the Court of Chivalry decided against him, whereupon he appealed, but unsuccessfully, to the King. He was removed by the King from the office of Steward of the Household in January 1386/7.

He married, before the end of 1343, Margaret, according to modern doctrine, suojure BARONESS MONTHERMER, daughter and heir of Thomas DE MONTHERMER [LORD MONTHERMER].  He died 25 February or 4 March 1389/90,) and was buried in Salisbury Cathedral.  On 12 June 1390 his widow, having done homage, had restored to her various manors which she held in her own right, and she received dower under writs of 9 April 1392.  She died 24 March 1394/5, intestate.

John, a distinguished warrior and one of the heroes of Cressy, who m. Margaret, dau. and heir of Thomas, Lord Monthermer, and was summoned to parliament as a Baron from 15 February, 1357, to 6 December, 1389. His lordship had issue, John, Thomas, Robert, Simon, Eleanor, Sibyl, Katherine, and Margaret.
