Robert de Essex, son of Swein of Essex, whom he had succeed ed by c 1114. Married Gunnor, daughter of Roger Bigod, by w hom he had issue his son Henry. She married secondly Haim o de St Clair. He cannot have been the Robert of Essex wh o was married to Adeliz, daughter of Alberic II de Vere, a s is often stated, since his widow was certainly Gunnor, wh o had a son Hubert by her second husband Haimo; Haimo was s ucceeded by their son Hubert between 1137 and 146, around t he time that Adelisa occurs as wife or widow of Robert of E ssex. The Rotuli de Dominabus shows that Adelisa was certai nly married to a lord of the Essex fee. The solution theref ore would seem to be that Robert fitzSwein was succeeded b y a son Robert of Essex, possibly by a wife previous to Gun nor. This Robert had been succeeded by his brother Henry (w ho attested a charter of Stephen in 1140) by 1146 at the la test. Late in his life Robert fitzSwein founded the prior y of Prittlewell as a cell of Lewes, for the souls of his w ife (a possible reference to a dead first wife), his parent s and of his grandmother Beatrice, attested by Alberic II d e Vere and his brother Robert. Father also of Gunnor of Ess ex, who occurs in a dispute with the Valognes family over p roperty of Binham. [Domesday Descendants pp450-451]
