FORMER WILLS CREEK MAN SLAIN BY YOUTHS HE THREATENED TO KILL
A verdict of justifiable homicide was returned today in the fatal shooting of Sherman Touvell, 54, formerly of Wills Creek, at his home near Cambridge Thursday.
The verdict was returned by Guernsey county Coroner W. A. Larrick after Touvell was killed by his stepson, Ross Montony, 20, and a neighbor youth, Thomas Brown, 17. Touvell attempted to attack the two youths while they were asleep in the Touvell home, authorities said.
Touvell moved from Wills Creek in southern Coshocton county about 25 years ago.
Sheriff Wilmer Oliver said Touvell threatened to kill members of his family as well as young Brown's father, Okey. Deputies were assigned to the Touvell home Wednesday night, but Touvell did not reappear until about 3 a.. on Thursday, when he pried open a bedroom window, obtained a knife and a wrench and then attacked the two youths.
Brown fired three shots from a .32 calibre rifle but these failed to stop Touvell. Finally, Montany broke loose to get a 20-gauge shot gun and fire the fatal shot.
Surviving besides the stepson are the widow, Ethel, to whom he was married in 1931, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dora Tedrick of Cambridge route.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the McCracken funeral home in Cambridge. Burial will be in Franklin cemetery, Coshocton county.
