In a letter (now in the possession of Lois Stewart) dated 14 May 1980, Orville Montayne wrote:
"My father was Seward. I believe he was born in Charleston in 1880. He died in 1918 or 1919 and was 39 years old. He was the father of four children: Orville, Raymond, Dorothy, and Mae. We were all born in Esperance, NY.
My father's uncle "Bert was the father of a son and daughter, Herbert and Florence. Herbert Montanye served in World War I. He was gassed in France and shell-shocked , but survived."
In a later letter, dated 3 June 1980, Orville amplified his statements: "Bert Montanye's (my father's uncle) first wife's name was Hotaling.
"My mother was Harriett Bronk. Bert (mentioned above) later married Harriett Bronk and became my stepfather. Harriett Bronk died December 19, 1945."

Herbert Montayne, Sr., Dies of Pneumonia at Hospital.
Herbert Montayne, Sr. of 433 Chestnut street, passed away yesterday morning about 7 o'clock at the Parshall hospital, where he has been a patient since Friday with pneumonia.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the Lewis funeral home with Rev. Dr. George MH. Phillips of the First Methodist Episcopal church officiating. The body will be taken to Esperance for interment in the family plot of the cemetery there.
Mr. Montayne was born October 26, 1872, at Esperance, and there he spent most of his life. However, for the past several years he had lived in Oneonta, making his home with his son, Herbert Montayne, Jr., of 433 Chestnut street. Surviving besides the son is one daughter, Mrs. Alex Harper, of Schenectady, to whom the sympathy of wide circles of friends will be extended.
MONTANYE--MONTANYE
Herbert Montanye and Mrs. Hattie Montanye of 42 West street were married last evening at the First Baptist parsonage by Rev. Dr. E. J. Farley. They were attended by Oliver Montanye and Miss Hazel Jacobs. The groom is employed by the D. and H. Company. The newly married couple will reside at 42 West street, where the best wishes of friends will accompany them.
Charleston, Montgomery County, New York. Esperance Road. Household 168/169. Herbert Montanye, age 12, is living with his uncle Sheldon in 1910. He was listed with his mother in 1900 as Herbert Hotaling, so it looks as if Lucy's relationship with Herbert Montanye started in 1898 or 1897 while Lucy was still living with her first husband William Hotaling.
