Monty Eugene Montanye |
Monty Eugene Montanye was born on April 15, 1947, in Selma, Ca. to Helen and Charles C. Montanye. For more than two decades, he was known as the "Voice of Fresno State" or "Mr. Fresno State" as well as an Elks Lodge leader and acclaimed vocalist and inspirational public speaker, died at the age of 62, Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at his Fresno home after a valiant fight against cancer. His Fresno State nicknames were the result of a 22-year career within the California State University, Fresno, community relations office that included a weekly radio program on KMJ and other valley radio stations, reporting upon people and events on campus and greatly enhancing the university's image and prestige. He was involved deeply in media relations and often represented the university in presentations before groups and organizations. Blessed with a distinctive voice, Monty was also well known for more than 20 years as the announcer and vocalist (the National Anthem was his specialty!) for the Bulldog Marching Band. He sang the "Star Spangled Banner" at countless Fresno State football games and band reviews and at football and baseball games and other events all around California. Before retiring, Monty worked 30 years for Fresno State, from which he graduated with a degree in political science in 1969. As a student, Monty was active in the Radio-Television department, including campus station KFSR and the college's longtime Sunday morning "Comic Section of the Air" broadcast on KMJ. Monty's lifelong delight with and participation in music and singing began as a boy in his native Fowler, where he graduated from Fowler Union High School in 1965, and took part in several musicals and other shows. He sang regularly in choirs and as a soloist at the United Presbyterian Church of Fowler and later at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Fresno, as well as for special events. He served the Fresno community in many ways. In 1979 and 2007, Monty was elected as Exalted Rulers (President) of Fresno Elks Lodge No. 439 and went on to head several Elks district committees. He became District Deputy for the Grand Lodge in 1985. Monty served as a Fresno Dance Repertory Association director and on the boards of the Fresno Press Club, the Easter Seal Society of Central California and the California Easter Seal Society. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Montanye. Monty is survived by Genie, his wife of 24 years; his mother, Helen Montanye of Fresno; and his brother, James Montanye of Fresno.
