Between 1801 and 1820 a group of Montanyes (including Henry, John, and Nicholas with their families) crossed the boundary from Orange County, New York, into Pompton Township, Bergen County, New Jersey (now part of Passaic County). The Nicholas of this group settled in Jefferson Township, Morris County, New Jersey, by 1830. His descendants worked in the various iron mines located in this township until the 1880s when they relocated to other areas of New Jersey. It seems very likely that this group of Montanyes was descended from the Montanyes in Sussex County, New Jersey, between 1760 and 1790, and possibly from Montanyes in Morris and Somerset Counties of New Jersey between 1725 and 1780, but we need more information from descendants of all of these families to clarify the very patchy public records of the post-war (Revolutionary War) period.
